the low center accelerated to more than 50 knots during Saturday,creating a confused, tossing sea with steeply sloped waves. Condi-tions near Raoul Island turned from fair to foul within 24 hours.

The weather system reached the peak of its development atabout 0600 UTC, Sunday, June 5 (6 PM local time), with centralpressure about 978 mb, generating a swell judged by rescue aircraftto be 30 to 45 feet high. A senior pilot of the New Zealand Air ForceNo. 5 Squadron, with 10,000 hours' experience, commented thathe had not seen anything like these wave conditions before.
