Chapter Fifty-eight

Dean felt like he had made a start. He had intended to talk about the awkward feelings he had been having with women, but he couldn’t go there. He was still having trouble admitting such thoughts to himself, let alone sharing them with a shrink in a RAV4 in a parking lot. Not the appropriate setting.

But he had brought up the need to see someone, and the doc hadn’t laughed him out of the vehicle. Instead, Dean was certain that by the end of the day, he would have the names of a couple of mental health professionals he could call.

And that was a damn good beginning.

“Hey, could we stop at the mini-mart? I want to pick up something,” Dean said.

“What do you need?”

“A prop. I just want to get something to make it look like we actually ran an errand and didn’t spend our time bonding in a deserted parking lot.”

“Clever. Although MacNett might see through that one,” I said.

“You think? Really? She’s not one of you, you know.”

Lucky for her. Some days I didn’t want to be me, either, although those days were fewer lately. “She’s not a psychologist, but she’s pretty observant. And analytical.”

“Yeah, she’s probably a Girl Scout, too. Okay, forget the mini-mart. Let’s just go back to the hotel.”

We rode in silence the rest of the way. It wasn’t until we were in the elevator that Dean spoke again.

“Thanks, man.”

Dean thought the doc was right. MacNett seemed to pay pretty close attention to what was said. He had watched her when she listened to the doc. She listened with her eyes as well as her ears. He wondered what went through her mind. He rapped on the door.

“Hi, guys,” she said. “Did you get some air?”

Dean held out his hand. “Sure did. Brought some back for you.”

MacNett smiled. Dean thought the ambient light seemed to dim in response.

“Funny man.”

“I have my moments. Did you power nap?”

“I did. It’s just what I needed.”

She had changed her clothes. She was wearing lounge pants, slippers, and a Pittsburgh Penguins tee shirt. She clearly was a true fan, but Dean had to wonder if she was toying with him a little.

“You okay, Lieutenant? You seem to be distracted,” MacNett said.

Dean realized he had been deep in thought. “I’m okay.”

Damn PhD’s.
