Chapter 33

When her new life started

REX AND JOSH ARRIVED at the Pink Poodle that night at seven in the Hyundai. Rex's hair was a salt-and-pepper color tonight. He was dressed in black cargo pants, hiking boots, a white t-shirt, a dark denim jacket, and large blackout dark glasses often worn by the blind. His headdress was a Dodgers baseball cap enhanced by Greg's modifications to confuse any facial recognition systems not under his and Rehka's control. He held a long white stick in one hand, and with the other, he held the handle on the harness attached to a big black dog with a service dog sticker and a prominent warning, DON'T PET ME. I AM WORKING. Josh was the older man tonight, with gray hair, gray mustache, gray beard, Dodgers cap, and all.

If anyone wanted to check, Rex had the necessary papers to prove that Digger was indeed a service dog. All of it was legal and genuine, and necessary according to the vet and the physician who issued the certificates.

Antonio Rubio, Jake, Rick, and Marc Dunn were in the same private lounge as the night before.

There was a different band on stage. "Not much better than the cat stranglers from last night." In Josh's judgment.

They got the same almost-cute server in her Pink Poodle outfit. A twenty-dollar tip bought them the same excellent service as before. Yet she didn't recognize either of her clients from the night before.

They'd finished about half of their beer when Josh touched his blind friend's arm and said, "She's here."

Shortly after, Josh walked over to Abbie's table. She was with a coworker.

He greeted them politely and stood until Abbie invited him to sit down. He sat opposite her and looked at her when he spoke. "I'm here for my unfortunate friend over there." He motioned toward Rex and Digger. "He lost almost all of his sight a few years ago in the war. He's a good guy and a good friend but extremely shy. He's still ah . . . ah well. . . oh dear, how shall I put it? He's never been. . . you know. . . with a woman… he's never had —"

Abbie smiled and held her hand up. "Say no more; everybody has shy friends."

On the TOMATS, Marissa and the others were laughing. It was rare that her husband was at a loss for words. She was going to needle him about this when he got home.

Josh looked at the other girl apologetically. "No offense intended, ma'am, but when my friend could still see, there was only one woman he obsessed about, Emma Beckett, the—"

"TVN Twenty-Four-Seven morning show host, the former Miss USA," interjected the girl. She upped and left without saying goodbye.

"I hear that often," said Abbie.

"So, will you? . . . please. . . I mean, are you. . . ah—"

"Yes, I will. You don't have to charm me; I'm a sure thing. Now take me to your friend."

"Ah. . . sorry. . . just one more question.
