Under the horrific and seemingly hopeless conditions in the camps, many men were unable to cope and simply gave up, while others did not. In American popular culture, whether in literary fiction or Hollywood movies, such differences can be easily explained by the courage and intestinal fortitude of larger-than-life heroes. John Wayne comes immediately to mind, but in reality, the Duke never saw a battlefield or the inside of a prisoner camp. Unlike fictional heroes, a man’s physical appearance or exemplary courage did not guarantee survival. Then, too, men who had exhibited great bravery on the battlefield could act very differently when confronted by oppressive conditions in a POW camp. In the final analysis, to survive captivity one had to retain at least a semblance of sound health and a positive mental attitude. But even more important was a preponderance of good luck.
