Chapter Eighteen

Christmas Goodies

The next three hours flew by, watching Link interact with all the vendors, and his wonder and surprise at all the interesting and beautiful crafts and gifts he’d found. “How many more do you need to buy for?” I was amazed how many gifts he purchased. Where I barely bought for anyone, he found a little something for everyone he knew. Even his elderly neighbor who had lived next to his parents since we were little.

“I think I have everything. This has been amazing. They still have the small craft fair at the fairgrounds, but it’s nothing like this.”

“Do you still go? We used to go every year but not since I moved out of town.” Truth be told I hadn’t enjoyed going at all. My mom dragged me there every year and looked at everything they had. It was maybe a tenth of what was here, but to me when I was young, it felt like I was walking to Sacramento and back.

“I took your mom last year. Well really, it was me and Blair. None of the other guys could be convinced to go.” He grinned and sampled a few of the dip mixes sold at one stand.

“I feel like I’ve missed so much since I left town. When I lived there it was as though nothing ever changed, now when I return it’s like time has rushed forward to a point where I never lived there at all.”

“For me it feels like time crawls by at times. Don’t get me wrong, I’m busy, but nothing ever really changes. There are some weeks where nothing is different: I get up, go to work, see the same people, do the same things. It’s like I’m caught in a time warp.”

“I remember that feeling. It was part of what made me decide to leave. Like I said before, I knew if I stayed, I’d never have a chance at building a career, and that would have really hurt.” His eyes held mine, and for just a split second he looked sad. I couldn’t figure out if it was knowing why I’d left, or if he’d wanted me to stay.

“Any luck remembering the night before Thanksgiving?”

“No, not yet. I thought for a moment I had a flash of a memory but then it was gone.” He stopped walking as I continued forward and tugged me back to him.

“What did you see?”

The memory flashed across my mind once again, but not quite as clear as it had been before. “I’m not sure. We were outside on the balcony at the bar talking. I thought you told me—” He leaned in close and waited for me to finish. But I couldn’t. If I told him what I thought he’d said and he hadn’t, we could both hopefully laugh it off, but if it was true . . . well, I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about that, so for a while longer I’d keep it to myself until I either knew
