CHAPTER 9

Kara

Max and I were sitting on my couch waiting for Bobby to show up. “I have no idea what is keeping him. He’s never been this dedicated to a job before. Maybe he found one that he really likes.”

I expected some positive words to come from Max, oh how this was all a good sign. But he didn’t respond. There was something bothering him. His body language, the way he was so stiff beside me, and not in a good way, had me worried. I wanted to ask him what was wrong, but this wasn’t the time. Bobby could come in any moment, and we wouldn’t have a chance to finish our conversation.

I’m going to find out before this night is over. If it’s something I did, I need to know.

“Did you still want to go out for dinner after we speak to Bobby?” I asked.

“Sure,” he said, not even looking at me.

All he was doing was staring at the front door. “If he doesn’t come home soon, I guess we can go to dinner and try talking to him tomorrow.”

“No. We can wait for him,” he said firmly.

This was so strange. He seemed more focused on Bobby than on me. After what we had shared last night and this morning, I’d have expected a little more enthusiasm to see me. Guess it wasn’t as good for him as it was for me.

Five minutes must have gone by without either of us uttering a word. I hated this. This was worse than when Bobby ignored me. I was just about to break the silence when the front door opened, and Bobby strode in.

“Hey, if you wanted the place to yourself, you could’ve just texted me,” he said.

I rolled my eyes at him. “I’m not in the mood for your jokes, Bobby. I’ve been waiting here to talk to you.”

“With this guy?” he asked.

Max said, “Yes. There’s something I want to discuss with you too.”

“Didn’t my sister tell you already that I don’t need you to train me anymore? I’ve got a job,” he said and was about to walk away, when Max stopped him.

“I have a better offer for you,” Max stated. “Sit down and I’ll tell you all about it.”

That was the first I’ve heard of it. I thought he was here to back me up when I talked to Bobby. Once again, I’m the last to know anything, and I hate it.

Bobby took the chair across from Max and said, “You got my attention, but not for long.”

“Don’t be rude,” I said to him.

He huffed and said, “I’m listening. What’s your offer?”

Max said, “I hear you’ve been working really hard at construction.” Bobby nodded. Max added, “I have a company who is willing to hire you, train you and guarantee employment.”

Bobby got up and said, “Don’t need it. Already got what I want.”

Before he could walk away again Max said, “No. Trust me, Bobby. That’s not the job for you. Your boss is an ass. He doesn’t know one fucking thing about…construction.
