Chapter thirty-five

lachaNophobIa – fEaR of VEgEtablEs

“Nyx! Hurry up!”

She opened her eyes. Tellus.

Nyx sat up. Her sister was leaning over her. They were in their usual spot, sitting on the grass under the dead tree next to the foggy river. Tellus crouched next to Nyx.

Dream Tellus had two distinct personalities. One where she was seminormal—someone you could have a conversation with.

And then there was psychotic Tellus, who would kill animals while conversing. And, by the feathers and crusted blood trapped under her fingernails, this was the latter. Great.

Nyx was wary. “Tells . . . what’s up?”

Tellus smiled as she tore at the gaping hole in her cheek. “I have something to show you.” She grabbed Nyx’s arm and hauled her to her feet. She spun them around, bringing Nyx face to face with a shimmering, watery screen. On the other side, instead of seeing more of the foggy meadow, she saw a bedroom and a large, old vanity.

“What? Whose room are we looking at?”

Her sister shushed her. “Just wait . . .”

Suddenly, a figure sat down at the vanity. The woman had her back to them, a large, dark-green cloak wrapped around her shoulders. Long white hair—not unlike Mortem’s—spilled down her back. In the reflection, Nyx saw the woman’s face: gray skin and white hair like polished silver. Her orange eyes were encircled with thick, dazzling kohl and shimmering shadow.

Nyx let out a breath. She was—in Necromancer eyes—stunning.

Tellus whispered, “Just waaaait . . .”

Looking back, the woman stood from her chair, makeup in hand. The cloak fell from her shoulders, revealing a low-cut gown. Her back was splayed with copper-colored tattoos.

“Oh, come on, I swear I just saw it,” Tellus whined.

Then, as the woman adjusted her hair, Nyx saw her image flicker.

For a moment the gray around her shimmered and seemed to glow golden. The closer Nyx looked, the more it glitched. Once more, a golden glow enveloped her. Her sickly skin became sun kissed. Her eyes changed to a wooden brown, her hair from white to golden blond. The twists of wire and pins in her hair changed to a beautiful crown of brightly colored flowers. The tattoos on her back disappeared and her skinny frame filled out. Her dress transformed, becoming a long-sleeved gown of the deepest red.

It was as if she was flickering between two different selves.

“Did you see it, Nyxie?” Tellus asked as the glitch settled. The Necromancer they’d seen only a moment ago had vanished.

She nodded her head. “What’s her name?”

“She calls herself Ossa.”
