KENNEDY

Allie opens the door to my condo and holds it for me, allowing me to shuffle through. The ache in my arm ratchets up to a sharp stab every time I inadvertently shift it slightly with each step. “You should have just taken the wheelchair Aunt Nora and Pope offered to help get you home and into bed.”

I glower at her as I finally make it all the way in. “I was shot in the arm, not the leg or ass. I can walk.”

She allows the door to shut behind us. “Uh-huh.” Giving me a reproachful look, she lifts the plastic bag in her hand containing my meds and inclines her head toward the kitchen. “Come take your pain medication before you go lie down.”

My eyes drift toward the hallway leading back to my bedroom, and I’m tempted to forgo the narcotics and collapse into a familiar bed and hide forever, but the increasing pain in my arm forces me to follow her instead.

Pope lectured me on how important it was to stay on top of pain, especially the first few days after surgery like this, and I can’t handle arguing with Allie about it right now. She’s likely to call him over, or even worse, Bishop, to get me to take them if I protest.

Allie sets the bag on the counter, along with her purse. “I really wish you would’ve just gone to stay with your mom and dad like they wanted.”

I shake my head. “I haven’t been able to live under their roof since I was eighteen without them driving me crazy. I’m definitely not doing it now.” I lean my hip against the counter, needing the support after barely being on my feet at all for days on end. “I’ll be fine.”

She gives me that look again. “You’re not fine, which is why I’m here and I’m going to stay.” Her hand shoots up to stop me before I can argue. “Whether you want me to or not. You and I are going to have a little slumber party for the next couple of days until you feel better and can defend yourself if…if anything else might happen…”

The pain and fear in her voice make my chest tighten, the same guilt that’s been weighing down on me for the last few days since the shooting returning so quickly that it practically suffocates me. “I think you should go stay with Jude and Angie. I need some time alone.”

She starts pulling my prescriptions from the bag. “You know that won’t happen. Or have you forgotten what family you’re a part of?”

“How could I ever forget that?”

It’s the thing I love the most and hate the most about the Hawkes. No one is ever truly alone. We watch each other’s backs and defend every last member of the family to our dying breaths.

That also means little to no time alone, especially when there still isn’t any answer about the shooter—nothing but a burned-out car found miles away, with any evidence destroyed by the fire they started to do just that.
