As she reread the email, conflicting emotions swirled through Katelyn’s mind. She opened the contract. It was a garden-variety contingency agreement. The initial payment was nonrefundable, but the firm assumed responsibility for all other expenses of litigation subject to reimbursement from any recovery. The attorney fee percentages were clearly set out in all capital letters. She debated whether to immediately forward it to David but decided not to.

Thirty minutes later, she heard David’s voice in the hallway outside her door. Her brother-in-law stuck his head through the opening.

“Good morning,” he said. “Just wanted to let you know Nan and I had a good visit with my dad, then I stopped in to see a client.”

Katelyn braced herself to mention the email from Attorney Abernathy.

“One odd glitch with his short-term memory,” David continued. “He’s convinced you’re pregnant. Maybe one of the hospital staff is pregnant, and he managed to confuse her with you.”

Katelyn felt the blood rush out of her face. When she didn’t respond, she saw the expression on David’s face change.

“Are you pregnant?” he asked.

“Yes, maybe five or six weeks,” Katelyn answered. “We weren’t going to mention it to anyone until after my first ultrasound, but Robbie told your father on the spur of the moment. Carter was so happy that I was glad we did. Robbie reassured me that he wouldn’t remember the news.”

“Congratulations!” David said with a smile. “I can’t wait to see Robbie as a father.”

David turned to leave.

“There’s one other thing,” Katelyn said. “I heard this morning from Regina Abernathy in Miami. They’ve agreed to accept the Caldwell case.”

David faced her. “Did she still insist on the nonrefundable deposit?”

“Yes, but you need to read the email,” Katelyn added quickly. “There’s nothing about it that gives off a bad vibe. Regina even interviewed with Morgan and Monroe for a summer job in the New York office. I think we’ll be able to work together. I know what you said yesterday, and Zeke agreed with you about the fleece idea, but I believe we should let him make his decision in light of this new information.”

Having run out of arguments, Katelyn waited for David to reply.

“Are you surprised?” he asked.

“Yeah. I was shocked.”

“Send me the email, and I’ll discuss it with Zeke.”

After reading Regina Abernathy’s email, David understood why Katelyn wanted to recommend that Zeke hire the Miami law firm. Where else would he find legal representation for such a sophisticated type of claim? He forwarded the message to Zeke with the request for a follow-up phone call.

Midmorning, Candy buzzed his office. Tyler Crandall was on the phone.

“Do you remember our conversation yesterday at the restaurant?” the financial planner asked in a hurried voice.

“Which part?”

“About God. I went over what you said with Lori last night, and she started crying.”

David tensed. He didn’t want to get blamed for upsetting Tyler’s wife.

“And then I started crying too,” Tyler continued. “We weren’t heading for divorce, but I apologized for stuff I knew was wrong in our relationship and hadn’t considered a big deal.
