Chapter 17

Liam

Liam closes the app. He booked a mule ride to the bottom of the canyon. Oh, the irony. A wolf riding a mule. He’ll make up some joke before calling Charlotte tonight. He reaches for his day pack out of the back of the Bronco when his phone chimes. He swipes the screen and a text from Brian shows. “Hey, man. I think Maddy is in trouble.”

Liam punches the green camera for a video call.

“Hey, Liam.” Brian’s concerned face comes across the screen. Liam doesn’t like it.

Instant nervousness. “What do you mean, Maddy’s in trouble?”

Shaking his head, Brian explains. “Stacy has been trying to call her for over a week. Maddy wasn’t answering, so she finally called her asshole mate. He said she was at the store, but something didn’t sit right with either of us. Especially when she didn’t call back this morning. My gut told me to call you.”

Madeline is Liam’s kid sister. The Gold Beach Pack followed old laws until Brian became Alpha and started changing everything, but that was too late for Maddy. She had been promised to a male in an allied pack years before. The prick is only alive because Maddy asked Liam to stay out of it.

“Thanks man. Looks like I’m headed back north.”

“I wish we could help, but if we break the treaty, it won’t just be the Cascades that cause us headaches.” Brian apologizes.

“I know, Bro. I wouldn’t want the pack in any danger. Besides, I’ve waited nine long years to kill that fucker.” Liam will find Leo before he retrieves Maddy. That way, she can’t convince him to just leave again. “I’ll let you know when I have her.”

“My mate is losing her shit, so I appreciate it. You don’t understand what it’s like to keep a dominant she-badger quiet when someone she loves is hurting. She shifted this morning and gashed the shit out of my thigh.” The line goes dead and Liam’s mind races. He throws his daypack through the window and closes the back. He’ll make it as far as Vegas tonight and keep trying to get Maddy on the phone.
