Amsel led the way as he and the others were marched down into the cellars where the holding cells were. The interrogation rooms were nearby so they could hear screaming and begging coming from behind the doors. Which was presumably what their captors wanted them to hear.

“Now” said Amsel to the junior Korean officer, “I expressly ordered the Presidential suite with a view of the sea, and twenty-four hour room service. I do hope this has been taken care of, otherwise I will demand a refund.”

The Korean officer wordlessly opened the cell door and motioned for everyone to move inside. Amsel looked at him blankly.

“You forgot the chilled champagne and strawberries.”

The officer nodded to the guards who beat Amsel relentlessly with the butts of their rifles. Eventually when he was lying on the floor bloodied and groaning, he was unceremoniously thrown inside the cell.

“Anyone else wishing to make a smart comment?” asked the officer.

When the others walked into the cell, the door was slammed shut and the lock turned noisily. Since there were no windows, the cell was plunged into complete darkness. Amsel groaned on the floor and one of the British soldiers helped Amsel sit up and put his back up against the wall.

In the gloom, Brinkmann placed her hand gingerly on the damp dirty wall.

“Come on Major, find a way to get us out of here.”
