CHAPTER NINE
âWhat are you doing here, Amy?â Micah took no pleasure in her surprise at his presence; he just wanted to figure out what was going on.
âNo, Micah, thatâs my question? What are you doing here?â
Shutting the door on the rain that still pounded, he stepped into the lobby. A quick shake of his dark head flung water droplets everywhere. âFollowing you,â he answered.
Outrage flickered across her face. âWhat gives you the right?â
âThe same thing that gave you the right to keep my identity a secret.â
She flinched. Micah winced. Okay, maybe that had been a shot below the belt.
He looked around and asked, âYou want to tell me what youâre doing consorting with a known criminal?â
âNone of your business.â
Fury exploded through him. âIâm making it my business! In case you havenât noticed, someoneâs tried to kill me several times over the last few days. Call me paranoid, but your actions donât add up. You donât tell me my identity, youâre obviously hiding something and now youâre having a rendezvous with a woman whoâs on a wanted poster. What am I supposed to think?â
âYouâre not supposed to think anything. I came here for answers to my own questions. I may need to find those answers before I can do anything about yours.â
Muscles tensed in reaction to his almost overwhelming desire to hit something. Forcing himself to relax, he took in a calming breath. âLook, we still need to talk. I should be on the phone with the cops and have them out here combing the grounds looking for that woman.â
âNo, donât do that!â
In agitation, Micah scraped a hand down the side of his face that bore his scars. âNo, I donât suppose thereâs any point now, is there? We both know how fast the justice system moves out hereâwhen it moves at all, that is.â He paced forward, back. âIs there somewhere we can go to finish our discussion from earlier in the day?â
âI need to tuck Carlita into bed. I promised.â
Micah didnât know what to think. She was apparently on friendly terms with a murderer and yet she was worried about breaking a promise to a six-year-old who wasnât even her own child. He felt like throwing up his hands and letting out a massive yell.
Instead he looked at his watch. Seven forty-five. âMeet me in the kitchen at eight-thirty. If you donât show up, Iâll hunt you down.â
Oops, that was the wrong tone to take and wrong thing to say. Amy narrowed her eyes, stepped forward and jabbed a finger in his chest. âDonât threaten me, Micah.â
âOr what?â
âI donât know what,â she blustered, âbut youâll be sorry.â
âI already am sorry,â he murmured.
She flinched and turned to go. He grabbed her arm, pulled her back. âIâm not finished. I mean, Iâm sorry you feel you canât trust me. Iâm sorry youâre so bullheaded that you refuse to ask for help. Iâm not your enemy, Amy. Weâve known each other forever. Youâve been a little sister to me since you kicked me in the shins for locking Cassidy in the closet because she was getting on my nerves.
