Chapter Nineteen

Bryce Aarons

“Hey, Dad?” I call out after I finish putting up one of the new displays.

“Yeah?” he yells out from the back of the shop. We don’t have any customers in the shop right now, so I make my way to the back. Dad meets me halfway. “Do you need help with something?”

“No, no, it’s nothing like that,” I say. “I just have a question.”

“Okay…” Dad says quietly, confused as to why I’m not just asking. I went to their house last night and had dinner with them, and I talked to them about a lot of stuff. Mom hadn’t read Lainey’s letter yet, but Dad had, and he wanted to know how she was doing.

“I know you hate to sell things to me, but would you be willing to sell me all those paints at a discounted price?” I ask pointing to the box of paints I’ve been avoiding creating a markdown price for. “I’m about to mark them down because you got a new shipment in, so I wouldn’t be depleting the supply or anything.”

“You want to get them for Lainey, don’t you?”

“I wouldn’t tell her that they were from me because she wouldn’t accept it if she knew that, but she told Mr. T that she had to buy some paints before she can finish the mural inside the store. I was just thinking about putting them anonymously on her doorstep or something. Eventually, probably sooner than I would like, she’ll realize it was me who gave them to her, but she’s already drawn up all these plans and is trying to help them, so I want to help too.”

Dad stares at me for a few seconds. “I tell you what,” he says. “I’ll give you all the paints for free.”

“What?”

“I want to help the Kelly’s as much as you do, so you can have the paints. I went over to Off the Record yesterday and saw her design on the wall. It looked amazing, and Trent showed me her other designs and I think the store will look great once it’s done.”

“Thank you.”

“The anonymity is probably a good idea though. From what you’ve told me of Lainey, she probably wouldn’t accept the paints from you. She seems very independent, so just leaving them on her step or even bringing them to Off The Record would be better. Hopefully she’ll still accept them.”

“I’ll place them on her doorstep after work today,” I tell him. “Thank you.”

“Welcome,” Dad says as he turns back to go back into his office. “Good luck.”

“With what?”

“Everything.” I hear him whisper before his door closes, and I’m left standing in the shop alone.

Everything? What does that mean?

Hearing the bell behind me, I turn around and find Carter walking into the store. I suppress my groan and walk toward him. Thankfully, I’ve only seen him one other time this summer. I know he’s been going to all the party scenes outside town, and I’m tired of explaining to him that I can’t do that anymore.
