FORTY-EIGHT

Eric Marshall moved through the crowd of people, feeling like he should be wearing armor.

He knew he didn’t belong with their ilk. He hadn’t come from a wealthy family, and he hadn’t had the luxury of friends in high places—or rather, friends in the right places. All he had was a desire to serve his country.

But when his time had been served, and he’d been given an honourable discharge, he’d been quickly forgotten. He always knew that one day, the battle would not be fought in a war zone or a desert. It would be fought in the cities, with no end of collateral damage.

He never regretted his deal with the Archive. They’d enabled him to continue serving his country and recruiting the best former soldiers to their cause. And as Avalon’s reputation had grown, they hadn’t just recruited lost souls looking for a new purpose. They recruited people fresh out of training, young soldiers who hadn’t lost their idealism, who weren’t scarred both physically and mentally.

But Marshall had received no end of controversy in the past two decades. People who dismissed him as a hired gun, no better than a thug with too many weapons.

There’d been outspoken protests amongst even the former soldiers, one of whom had taken to the press to air his grievances. Marshall’s only regret was that he couldn’t be there to unload on Browning himself.

And of course, he’d had competitors, like that woman who was stealing his business out from under him. But he’d been able to see to her.

There was a silent shame that Marshall carried around with him. He liked to think of himself as a self-made man, somebody who’d come from nothing and built himself up until he was one of the most sought-after contractors in America.

But deep down, he knew that all his successes would not have come about without the help of Janine Wright and the Archive.

Even after twenty years, he still felt like he was paying the debt he owed her.

He had wanted to do some good with his remaining years. While Avalon had brought in the millions, it was the rehabilitation of former veterans that Marshall poured his heart and soul into. And he wanted that venture to have as little to do with the Archive as possible. He had something in his life that wasn’t built on dirty money. He had hoped that one day, many years from now, he could break away from the Archive altogether. He wouldn’t need to lend them his soldiers for a small fee. He could even set up a charitable trust. But he needed somebody to attach their name to it. Somebody who swam in the political waters.

But as he moved from person to person, trying to find someone willing to help him launch a program to support people, they’d dismiss the notion with a hand wave and a cavalier, “Don’t call us, we’ll call you.” And one of them had even laughed as though the whole statement had been a joke.
