Chapter Eight

It had been the best Spring Break of his life. Hell, the best time of his life, and all he and Paul did was hide out in the apartment and fool around.

“Study hard, son,” his mother had slurred out after George called her to explain where he would be during the break. “It’s stupid to leave the campus anyway. You need your degree!” Then she had burped and hung up.

Now, George hesitated before the front door, his suitcase held by his side. A part of his heart ached at the thought of leaving, the bookshelves full of textbooks and the blinds always closed no matter the situation…this place had been more like home than the mansion he had grown up in. He shifted on his feet and turned back to Paul, who stood behind him and had his arms crossed and his brow drawn.

“I’ll see you tomorrow for lunch,” George said, as if either one of them needed reminding of their lunch plans the next day. George forced himself to smile, though somehow, it worsened his ache. “And maybe next term, I’ll take another class with Dr. Gregor.”

“He’s a piece of work,” Paul said, shaking his head. “Don’t waste any more time on him.”

“I wouldn’t take his classes to see him.”

Paul walked up and pressed his lips against George’s.

A dangerous habit. They’d have to make sure to go back to shoulder-bumping when they were outside.

“Move in with me,” Paul said.

George nearly said “yes” and kissed Paul with wild passion. But as much as his heart leaped at Paul’s words, something in the back of his mind tempered all emotions.

His dad. His dad’s money. The money that already paid for use of the dorm during Spring Term.

George had been wanting to be more responsible, just as he had wanted to be more patient and accepting of his father.

“You don’t want to,” Paul said, voice low and gaze aimed at his own shoes. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have—”

“I’d love to, Paul, but I can’t right now.” George squeezed Paul’s hand and reminded him of his father’s money. “He’s always taken care of me financially, even when I’ve been wasting time trying to figure out which major to commit to. I have to respect that. He deserves it.”

“Fuck him,” Paul growled. “He treats you like shit, and he treats people who are different from him like shit, too. He deserves to have all of his precious wealth wasted.”

George went cold, his grip on Paul’s hand going slack.

Paul’s face fell, horror bursting in his eyes. “No, no, I didn’t mean that. Any money you use, especially for yourself, isn’t a waste. Not at all.” He squeezed George’s fingers and stepped closer. “Not when you deserve all the wealth Justice Keaton gives you and more.”

“Paul—”

“I just meant that he doesn’t deserve having all that money while so many people suffer without. You do though. You should use it to learn as much as you can. Education is power. The more you learn, the stronger you are.
