Chapter 21

For the next week, my aspirants continued to make progress. Of sorts. Shamsan and I continued to refine our skills, taking turns pinpointing areas on the wall to burn. Jenni managed to call esfirenda more often than not, and even Paulette left her watchful post to work on summoning the fireball.

Of the five of us, only Lena was unsuccessful, though I could tell she was trying her hardest. I began to feed her some of my power, which only resulted in making me tired and ineffective and had no noticeable impact on her skill.

It took effort not to snap at her as the days went on and Thorne grew more distant. I dined twice with my father, though our conversations were stilted. I couldn’t forgive him for stealing my stone.

Then, one morning, he joined me for breakfast. At the end of our meal, he pulled out a sheaf of letters from Castle Raine.

“These arrived for you,” he said, handing them to me.

“I wish you wouldn’t read them.” I frowned at the open seals.

He raised one auburn brow. “I’m only looking out for your best interests, Rose. You know how your mother can be.”

I pressed my lips together, thinking of Mama’s various plans to marry me off for Raine’s political advantage. Of course, she’d also claimed she was trying to protect me. I was growing weary of parents deciding the direction of my life.

The letter from her was on top, so I read it first.
