âI love my husband, but this is all his fault,â Louisa said when they were alone.
Sophia took a step back from the church pew uncertain how to answer, not wanting to open the floodgates of her anger.
âI donât need to be protected,â Louisa said, as if reading her mind. âI know youâre angry with William for what he did.â
âWhy did he do it?â she asked, unable to hide the bitterness from her voice. âHe knew what this promotion meant to me.â
âThatâs exactly why,â Louisa said. She rustled through her purse and pulled out an envelope. âHe can tell you more himself. Here.â She handed it to Sophia. âIâll leave you two alone.â
Once Louisa left, Sophia sat alone in the church. She wasnât sure she wanted to hear anything William had to say, but her curiosity got the better of her. She unfolded the letter and read it quietly.
Sophia, I can feel your anger all the way here in heaven.
She suppressed a smile. It was just like William to jump right in.
I know, I know. You think I betrayed you. Youâre right. I did.
Her muscles tensed reading his admission.
Before you rip this letter to shreds. Keep reading, please.
The backstabbing rat knew her well.
You are the perfect person for this position. Youâre smart. Your instincts are sharp. You solve common sense problems others overcomplicate. And, you have this uncanny way of making everyone you meet feel like the most important person in the room. I learned so much from you over the years.
Sophia sniffed and covered her mouth. Sheâd been trying all day not to cry, but now the salty liquid irritated her throat.
I know youâre wondering why I nominated Hasbrouck for CEO if I believe all the things Iâve written here.
She stopped reading and had to bite her lip not to say anything. Thatâs exactly what sheâd been thinking.
This is where the hard part comes in. I know you can handle it. Weâve never lied to each other. I donât plan on starting now that Iâm dead.
She shook her head and wanted to stay angry but couldnât stop the smile that crept across her face. He was William to the end.
Iâve watched you closely these last two years but only a month ago I realized what was changing in you. At the risk of sounding dramatic, I think Godâs been trying to talk to you and to me.
The letter slipped from Sophiaâs hand and dropped to the floor. She had to get down on one knee and reach under the front pew to pick it up. After she cleaned her hands and knee with a wipe, she sat back down to finish reading.
Before last month, I would have sworn I was a great mentor for teaching you everything I know. Then, through prayer, I realized I knew nothing. I was teaching you what was good for the here and now. What would make you rich and successful, but none of that matters to God. Money canât save your soul. I realize this sounds like something Louisa would say.
