Chapter 30

Twenty-seven minutes later Jarod was on the corner of East 124th Street and FDR Drive outside the Wagner Houses where he’d discovered the Thrill Cru Boyz hangout was located. Jarod took a peek in through the ground floor window of the housing project and could see the bangers inside with several ladies—breaking the law.

They were working with large quantities of a white powder he assumed was cocaine, mixing it with baking soda and cooking into tiny rocks of crack. Jarod was happy to see this. Not that they were making drugs, but that they were occupying themselves with an activity that would keep their attention focused—while he was outside—breaking a law of his own.

Jarod slinked away from the window and moved ten steps toward the street. There, unnoticed by those few out at 3:00 a.m., Jarod slipped into the front seat of a parked car—a car he’d had his eye on for several days now. The Cherry Red BMW—the exact make and model of the car Roger Hearns went off the Tourne Bridge in.

Jarod was quick with his hot wiring work and within seconds the Beemer rumbled to life with a throaty growl.

Jarod didn’t get to see the dumbfounded look on the gangbangers faces as they rushed out of the housing project letting hot lead fly. He didn’t have time for that. He had something special he needed the car for—a real life sim he had in mind.

Nineteen minutes later as he exited off Highway 3 west and turned onto New Jersey State Route 1947 north, Jarod had two thoughts. First, while this was only his second time behind the wheel of a car, he was pleased with how he was catching on very quickly and feeling proficient as a driver. He liked the freedom driving gave him, the control and the power of self-determination. This was a new feeling for him in general and one the act of driving enhanced. As Jarod merged onto the 118 east heading toward Tourne River he decided then and there he would get his own car one day and set out on the road like Johnny Boy Creed.

But for now he had a job to do—which brought him to his second thought: about Jane O’Donnell and what the bubble-headed reporter had been saying as she walked across the Tourne River Bridge, the bridge he’d be driving across in less than a minute and the one Roger Hearns was driving on when he lost control. “Well over the speed limit—in the rain. Why?”

Jarod felt that particular statement was the only thing the overly theatrical reporter had proffered that was worth a second thought. Had Roger Hearns been going the posted speed when he lost control, his car would not have been able to jump the concrete curb and crash through the guardrail, sending him and his child to the water below. Why indeed would a father be driving that fast in those conditions with his child in the car? Especially a father for whom transportation safety was his very job.
