CHAPTER 40

Xiou Palace. Manchuria. The Scroll.

---

I can not say for how long I lay there but when I awoke, dust was swirling around me in the sunlight. I could feel your thighs beneath the left side of my head, your hands absently stroking my hair.

“Sophie,” I whispered hoarsely.

“I’m here,” you replied.

You kissed my temple before gently extricating yourself from me and rising. I watched as you padded across the floor and went to the pitcher. You were still in your underclothes, still covered in both your and Wang’s blood.

I lay drained, too weak to move. I scanned the room with my eyes. There. Wang lay just to the right of me, not far from my feet. He was sprawled out unnaturally under the bed. I have no idea of how it was you had done it but somehow you had managed to pull Wang off of me.

You were coming towards me again, a cup of water in hand. You gently lifted my head and helped me to drink. The cup drained, I tried once again to speak.

“Ssshhh. Don’t try to speak just yet,” you said rising to pour more water into the cup.

“Are you..?” I managed.

“I’m fine,” you said, the wild, haunted look in your eyes causing me to doubt your claim.

I tried to get up.

“Don’t move,” you pled, hurriedly padding back to my side, the water quickly forgotten.

Inspite of your protests, I forced myself into a sitting position. I closed my eyes - rested my back and head against the wall.

“You have to get out of here,” I managed hoarsely. “You have to leave.”

“You’re in no condition to travel,” you said, “and I’m not going anywhere without you.”

I slowly opened my eyes again. “Sophie, please….”

“No!” you cried, tears welling up in your eyes.

“I want you to take the rest of the money and I want you to take Phoenix Fire and ride for Manchuria as hard and as fast as you can.”

You shook your head, tears streaming down your face now. “I’m not leaving you, Quay,” you said.

“It’s your only chance. While Wang may have thrown them off of the trail long enough for him to take his revenge unimpeded, the rest of the emperor’s men can’t be far behind.”

“I’m not leaving you behind to take the blame for what I did. I killed him, Quay. If they find you here alone with him, they’ll pin it all on you. I can’t let that happen.”

“Listen to me,” I said, cupping your face with both hands. “I killed Prince Wang.”

You shook your head emphatically.

“It was my blow to his chest with Phoenix Fire that ultimately caused his death, not some tiny puncture to the side of his throat,” I lied. “You didn’t even hit the vein.”

Even then I was not naïve enough to believe the words I spoke to you, even then I knew that the wound to Wang’s chest was nothing more than a mere formality.

Still, I couldn’t let you carry the weight of Wang’s death on your shoulders. I needed you, more than ever, to believe my lies.
