Chapter Eighteen

The Converged Plans

“This doesn’t feel right,” Wendy said softly, her shoulder against Kai’s arm as she cupped her tea in her lap, “without Alice.”

Kai nodded grimly. Lovisa had bade a meeting with the leaders of her new allies, all while the Dormouse and the March Hare dutifully passed out tea to all on the premises. Everyone held a teacup in hand before entering the alcove where a newly constructed table formed from interwoven bush branches awaited them. Deciding to stick together, Kai sat with Wendy on one end, Jack and Red on the other. They’d deemed it best to leave Alice in her lavvu with the Hatter.

“She always helped us make the plans,” Wendy continued. Her cup was lavender in her lap, empty. Kai traded hers for his untouched one, having found no appetite for the complimentary hot drink. Sipping gratefully, Wendy pressed, “And she clearly still knows things. How else could she have called everyone here? I didn’t even know the watch could twist like that. Her mind can’t be as far gone as we thought.”

Beside Wendy sat Pan with Tinker Bell perched lightly on his shoulder, the two Lost Boys called Slightly and Nibs standing behind with arms crossed and faces frowned in mock imitation of Tiger Lily’s dueled entourage who stood tall next to them. The White Queen, Celeste, sat winged by the Brothers Tweedle with the White Rabbit to accompany her.

Two giants, Ajaal and Trell, were seated at the edge of the alcove where only their knees touched the center table. Because their leader, Balthaz, had been captured by the Giant King, these two acted in his stead as representatives of the giant allies. On the opposite side of the giants’ knees sat Harry sandwiched between Liesel and the general Cat. Of those from the Enchanted Forest, they’d settled on sending King Thrushbeard with Aurore and Ingénu along with Esmeralda and Clopin. Isbjørn soon joined them, bringing Frost who appeared less grey though still shadowed under his crystalline eyes.

Lovisa headed the table, her cousin Latham standing at attention behind her while Mr. and Mrs. Crow perched on either side of her chair. Tjuv and Inga sat to her right next to Red, Bae standing with head high behind them, while Frost remained on his feet at Lovisa’s left. He placed one hand on the table as if to balance himself or else seem formidable. Perhaps both.

“What if she knows something that can help us?” Wendy asked worriedly.

Kai thought on all the things Alice had said in her madness, the riddles and hidden meanings. There was a key to unlocking her messages. He just had to pay attention.

“She’s already told us what to do,” he voiced, and he knew it was true. Alice had given him the pieces, tried to relay the answers that buzzed in her head. Kai just hoped he understood.

“Greetings,” Lovisa spoke, rising to address the whole. “I am Lovisa, princess of the forest people. As you are all here, I assume it is because you are aware of the present danger that threatens each of our worlds.
