The answer came back Friday, short and curt. “MOST URGENT. If Smith is alive, find him and fully interrogate him. This is a direct order, and I require an acknowledgment.”

Josie stared at Raven. She started crying. “I can’t keep doing this.”

“Yeah.” Raven typed, “Stand by,” and shut down his computer.

Josie looked at him inquiringly.

“Fuck it,” was all he said.

They did not work for the next two days. He went out and bought liquor. They sealed off the house, shut down the phones and Raven’s computer, set the alarm system, and proceeded to get drunk.

They made love that night for the first time, though neither remembered much about it. Both woke up with raging hangovers. Josie stumbled out of bed and brought back aspirin and ice water. She fell asleep in his arms.

Hours later, they got up and took showers. By then, it was almost noon, and they were both famished. Josie prepared breakfast: slabs of honeyed ham, and six scrambled eggs with chopped onions, mushrooms, and green peppers. Raven fixed a pitcher of bloody Marys.

As she was setting it out, Josie asked him, “What about the mission?”

“I’m getting too old for this shit. How about we just quit?”

Josie looked at him for a long moment. She turned off the stove, then leaned across the table and kissed him, letting her robe fall open. “I can make you feel years younger.”

“Breakfast first,” Raven said.

“Hmmmm…?” She purred, kissing him again and taking the Bloody Mary from his hand.

“I give up,” he said, moving down to kiss her nipples, which were already hard and erect. He laid her gently down on the rug.

“What about breakfast?”

He laughed. “I’ll be quick.”

“Don’t you dare...”

Later, after breakfast, they went back to bed. This time they remembered everything. They fell asleep watching the shadows on the ceiling lengthen, both knowing they’d always remember this day.
