CHAPTER FIFTEEN

If anyone would have told me I would have been moving back to a small town, with less than a thousand people, I’d have laughed in their fucking face.

But for RaeRae… I’d do anything.

“Are we there yet?”

Rae giggles in the backseat. I meet her pretty blue eyes in the rearview mirror and wink.

“I swear,” Pierce grumbles, tightening his hands on the wheel, “I want to leave you on the side of the fucking road.”

“Aw, but then you wouldn’t be able to enjoy getting fucked in the ass as much, pup!”

Phoenix snorts and hides it behind a fake scowl, but it’s too late. I already saw his smile.

“Rae. Baby.” Pierce groans. “Please let me leave him.”

“No way,” she says softly.

Her voice is so sweet, it’s almost impossible to match it with the sass she gives us daily. I’m jealous Pierce ever got to hear her before us.

“But seriously,” I say, leaning over and pressing my chin on his shoulder. “Are we there yet?” I whisper.

He plants his palm on the side of my head and pushes me back into my seat. But he laughs.

And that laugh creates a domino effect of laughter in the Jeep until there are tears in everyone’s eyes and my stomach hurts.

These are the moments I’ve loved since Rae’s been back.

Doesn’t matter how stressed we’ve been, we’re always finding something to laugh about.

I want to give her a lifetime of these moments.

“What the fuck?” Pierce barks, pulling the car off to the side of the road in front of the town sign. “Did I take a wrong turn?”

A sheet covers the sign and a few construction cones surround it.

“Says it’s under new ownership,” Phoenix says as he leans between the seats to get a better view.

“Who the hell would want to buy this town? No one’s given a shit about it before now.” Pierce pulls his phone out of the cupholder and starts poking around on the internet. “Grayson Hargraves. Estranged Heir to the Hargraves Estate. Left town five years ago with his pregnant girlfriend. The girlfriend and their daughter died on New Year’s Day at one in the morning, after all three were hit by a driver under the influence of…” His eyes meet mine as he swallows. “Someone under the influence of Rapture killed them.”

“Does it really say that?” I ask, leaning over to read from his phone.

“No, but it doesn’t have to. Says they were high on some new drug.” He shakes his head and goes back to reading. “Looks like he’s coming back to get a new purpose in life or some shit. He now owns the town and plans to change the name.”

“What’s the new name?” Rae whispers.

We look up just as a guy parks his white construction truck next to the sign.

He climbs out and picks up the cones, then tosses them in the bed of his truck. After swiping his hand through his messy brown hair, he reaches up and rips the sheet off the brand new sign.
