The kookaburras blared their familiar laughter, their raucous cackles echoing through the eucalyptus-scented air. It was a Tuesday morning, and I found myself jolting awake to the sound, disoriented by the abrupt intrusion of the avian symphony. My room was awash with the soft glow of morning light, casting a warm hue on the walls adorned with memories and Polaroids.

As I fumbled to check the time on my phone, panic seized me – it was later than I'd ever slept in on a school day, so late that I had already missed Mr. Marrow’s art class and my maths session would already be well in swing. The remnants of the chaotic night still left me drained, and evidently, my body had decided that a few extra hours of sleep were necessary. I shot out of bed, the kookaburras' laughter now a relentless reminder of time slipping away.

With a sluggish haste, I pulled on the first set of clothes my bleary eyes could discern from my closet. My head still throbbed, a lingering souvenir of the party's indulgences. The night still felt like a distant dream, and the fragmented memories struggled to coalesce into a coherent narrative. Yet, the urgency of the morning demanded my attention.

I had skipped that Monday's classes, a much-needed respite from the emotional and physical exhaustion that the party had unleashed upon me. I guess that's just me when the Monday hits. The heavy weight of the previous night lingered in every step, a peculiar mix of regret, confusion, and a tinge of vulnerability.

I grabbed my backpack, hastily shoving books and notebooks into its depths, my mind racing to calculate how much of the day I could salvage. My phone buzzed with a notification – a missed call from Emma. Guilt tugged at me; I had some explaining to do. She must have wondered where I was on Monday, and with the aftermath of the party, I hadn't even had the chance to message her. I made a mental note to call her after I sorted out my morning crisis.

The front door slammed shut behind me, and the sunlight assaulted my senses. I squinted against its brightness, my eyes scanning the street for any sign of life. The decision to sleep in, while providing a much-needed reprieve, now weighed on me as I faced the consequences of my actions.

I hopped on my bike, pedalling furiously towards the school, my heart pounding in rhythm with each rotation of the wheels. The familiar sights of the neighbourhood blurred into streaks of colour as I sped past, the wind whipping against my face. The rhythmic cadence of my hurried pedalling matched the pulse of anxiety that coursed through me.

My phone buzzed again, this time with a text from Paisley. "Raven, where are you? Missed you at school yesterday. Everything okay?"

I winced, knowing that my impromptu absence had raised questions. I fumbled for my phone, composing a quick reply as I manoeuvred through the streets.

"Hey, sorry about yesterday. Wasn’t feeling great. Riding to school now.
