CHAPTER 14

Katie lead me to the basement bedroom door secured on the outside with two sliding bolts and slid them both free.

“You don’t know what you stepped into here, whoever you are.” She said.

I pushed her inside.

The room was entirely dark except for three shafts of sunlight streaming through the ceiling of the room. My guess was that those were bullet holes made by Brittany while we struggled for the gun.

I had a sinking feeling that once the lights were on I would find the girl, whoever she was, lying in a puddle of blood. Killed by a stray bullet.

“Hit the lights.” I told her.

Katie edged deeper into the doorway and I followed and instantly regretted it. The tiny bedroom stunk of sweat and piss. There was a click and a fixture high in the center of the ceiling sporting a single bare bulb flared to life illuminating a homemade prison cell.

There was an unmade bed in the far corner. A metal frame complete with a wafer thin mattress, the kind I had in basic training, and there was bucket in the other corner. A few flies buzzed near that bucket and I could smell why from where I stood.

But there was no girl lying in a puddle of blood. No girl at all.

I stared at Katie and she gave me that look that said, are all men this dumb?

“Get out here.” Katie snapped. “Now.”

Slowly, tiny, dirty hands poked out from under the bed. The hands, in turn, were followed by skinny arms and finally, a terrified little face.

The girl’s matted brown hair screened half her face but the one blue eye I could see pin-balled wildly between me and Katie standing in the doorway.

“Come on.” I said, waving her forward. “I’m taking you home. Come on.”

The girl didn’t know me from Adam but she knew she liked me more than Katie. She wriggled out from under the rickety bed in her filthy nightgown and hopped to her feet.

I pushed Katie deeper into the bedroom toward the shit bucket as the girl ran to my side and wrapped her arms around my waist.

“You’re dead.” Katie whispered, eyeing the both of us with her venom. “You just don’t know it yet.”

The girl was pulling me toward the hall and I was happy to get going.

“Enjoy the room.” I told her. “The next one will be a lot smaller.”
