Hours later, my team and I are back in town, and I'm home with my daughter. I walk out of my bathroom, dressed and ready to go. "You really like her, don't you, Daddy?" Sloane is sitting on the foot of my bed with her pet guinea pig, Biscuit, in her hands.

I sit beside her. "I do. How do you feel about Genesis?

Sloane cocks her head and shrugs. "I like that she makes you smile."

"You say that as if I'm never happy and smiling. You make me smile every day."

My daughter sighs. "Daddy, it's not the same. I know you're happy, but I see a different kind of happiness in your smile when Genesis is around." Sloane nuzzles Biscuit to her face, and the guinea pig squeaks. "I'm happy if you're happy, Daddy."

Her words cause emotions to catch in my throat, and I pull her in for a hug. "You are the best thing to ever happen to me." I kiss the top of her head. "I love you, baby girl."

"I love you too, Daddy." I release my daughter and stand.

"How do I look?" I ask. My daughter's smile makes me melt.

"Very handsome."

"Go put Biscuit in his cage, and let's get you to Papa and Mimi's house." I grab my gun, wallet, and keys off the top of the dresser.

"Are you taking the truck or bike?" She hops on her toes, and I know what she's hoping I say.

"Bike." I smile at her excitement because she loves to ride with me. Tonight will be the first time I've had anyone but my daughter on the back of my ride.

"Yes!" She giggles and runs to her room.

With a helmet strapped on my daughter's head, I back the bike out of the garage and take off down the road toward my parents' place. It only takes a moment for us to pull up to their house. I help Sloane off the bike and walk up the porch, where she joins my parents, who are sitting outside watching the sunset.

"You polish up well." My dad looks at me while smoking his pipe.

"Thanks," I tell him, then lean down giving my mom, who is sitting in the rocking chair next to her husband, a kiss on the cheek. I turn toward my daughter, who's playing with one of the farm cats. "Mind your Papa and Mimi."

"I will," she replies.

"You go on and have a good time. Your Dad and I have everything under control. Your brothers are bringing the wives and kids down for a bonfire and s’mores."

"I may even take them snipe hunting." My dad smirks, and my mom does her best to hide her smile.

"What's snipe hunting?" Sloane asks, and all I can do is shake my head. A snipe hunt is a type of practical joke in which the unsuspecting participants are duped into trying to catch a nonexistent animal called a snipe. Everyone is led to an outdoor spot, and participants are given instructions to capture the snipe with an empty paper bag while making noises to attract it.
