Meditating on the Shakti
behind Mind and Prana
12. Mind and prana are endowed with knowledge and action. They are two branches whose root is a common power.

The mind is the power of knowledge (Jnana Shakti) and prana is the power of action (Kriya Shakti). They are like the two wings of a bird without which the bird cannot fly or move. Knowledge directs us to action and action brings in knowledge, and so the two remain interrelated. Both reflect the power of will, intention and motivation (samkalpa). Both mind and prana have a common power or Shakti behind them, which is ultimately that of the Self.
One can control both mind and prana by going to their root energy, the power of consciousness (Chit-Shakti). In this regard one should meditate upon the power through which the breath occurs and from which the breath arises, the breath behind the breath, or inner prana behind the outer prana, as the Upanishads say. One should similarly meditate upon the power behind our thoughts, the energy of consciousness behind the mind. This higher power of prana and of awareness is ultimately one.
You can merge into the pure energy, power or Shakti behind mind and prana, and let go of both mind and prana. Prana and mind both arise from the power of consciousness and must eventually return to it. The Self holds the highest immortal prana that can never be diminished, as it is aligned with its eternal consciousness.
