Chapter Fourteen

Day 13

Transcript from the TBC Broadcast of the four-hundred-meter hurdles, qualifying heats

CASSELLO: WELCOME back to the Olympic Stadium and the track and field events. First on the schedule for today is the four-hundred-meter hurdle qualifier. But before we get there, I understand we have some developing news from our correspondent, Leslie Boothe.

BOOTHE: Yes. Thanks, Jim. As you know, the World Anti-Doping Agency has had a strong presence at these Games. So far nearly a dozen athletes and nearly the entire Russian delegation have been disqualified after testing positive for banned substances. And now we’re hearing that there is a fresh group of athletes who have been DQ’d for doping, and this group may include a few Americans. I don’t have the names yet, but this is an evolving story.

CASSELLO: It would be terrible if American athletes have been caught doping.

BOOTHE: I have not been able to confirm which athletes have been disqualified, but we’re following this story closely and hope to have an update for you soon.

CASSELLO: Thanks, Leslie. Any thoughts, Jimmy?

GRAYSON: What a heartbreak it would be if Americans were caught up in this scandal.

CASSELLO: Agreed. I hope that story turns out not to be true, although I am glad the WADA is trying so hard to shut down doping. But if you redirect your attention to the track, the hurdles qualifying heats are under way. There are four Americans in these initial heats. None of them were in the first heat, but here in the second, we have a young runner named Brandon Stanton out of USC.

GRAYSON: Stanton is a really interesting runner. He’s only twenty-two. He’s been something of a prodigy, coming out of practically nowhere to win the hurdles final at the US Trials. He has some international experience, mostly limited to a handful of World Cup races, but he’s earned a few medals on the world stage. I’ve been watching him run in practice all week, and I have to say, his speed and his form are really fantastic. I think he has a solid chance at a medal.

CASSELLO: Those glasses are something else.

GRAYSON: Yes, I asked about that. He said he doesn’t see depth well enough with contact lenses, so he has to wear his glasses to run. You’ll see the little strap that keeps them on his head, though. Not the most glamorous look, but whatever works, right?

CASSELLO: Anyone else in this heat to look out for?

GRAYSON: A few standouts. Stefan Abramanian from Qatar in Lane 5 is in the mix. He came close to breaking the world record at last year’s World Championship. I also expect José Sanchez from the Dominican Republic to run well in this race.

CASSELLO: Oh, will you look at that. Stanton has his nails painted, just like Jason Jones Jr.

GRAYSON: That’s certainly some kind of statement. I never would have expected that from a runner like Stanton. He’s so straitlaced. But, well, I guess it’s the twenty-first century, eh?

CASSELLO: [laughs] All right. Let’s watch the race.

GRAYSON: Wow, that’s a great start from Stanton.
