‘So how do you know about … BPD, anyway?’ Jamie asked tentatively.

Thorsen handed her the binoculars and she pulled them to her eyes. She appreciated that he was no longer staring at her.

‘My cousin was diagnosed with it,’ he said, turning to face the water again. ‘Eventually.’

‘What happened?’

‘She developed it when she was a teenager – undiagnosed. She went off the rails, I guess you could say.’ He hunched forwards again, kneaded his hands. ‘Drinking, drugs – started sleeping with lots of guys. Got herself into trouble. She’s younger than me – twelve years. So I was already working in the Lulea polis.’ He sighed. ‘I had to pull her out of a few places. Dark places. When family calls, you know?’ he asked, but didn’t turn. He went on then. ‘We got her some help, after a while. She was in and out of rehabilitation centres, bounced around between family. Stayed with me for a while. She relapsed, badly – ended up getting arrested. She tried to attack one of the officers, was put in a secure unit, mentally evaluated, finally diagnosed. Her case was severe, though.’ He did turn this time. ‘It was bad. Nothing like …’

‘Me?’

He smiled. ‘Nothing like you. But we all needed to come together then, to support her. We learned the symptoms, the signs. We help her manage it. She stays clean – no drinking, no drugs. And she manages it. She knows how to, now. She has the tools.’

‘And she’s … okay?’ Jamie’s voice was small.

He nodded. ‘Yeah. Married. Two children. Beautiful kids. Husband is a nice guy. Software engineer. The best, actually. Really patient with her. Loves her to death. She’s lucky.’

‘She sounds it.’

‘I’m not saying you have it, though. I’m just saying that there are some signs that …’

‘It’s okay,’ Jamie said, but she knew it wasn’t. If she did have it, then she’d need to be diagnosed, and then she’d lose her badge. They wouldn’t let someone with BPD be a polis officer.

‘Hey, Jamie,’ he said, swivelling and leaning forwards to catch her eye. He put his hand on her knee. She didn’t pull away. ‘You’re fine. And I’m here.’

‘And you’re going to save me. From myself?’ She tried not to sound too sarcastic but it seemed to be her default these days.

‘You’re not someone who needs saving,’ he laughed. ‘I think we both know that. But you are someone who needs a friend. One that doesn’t let you get away with anything. One that’ll tell you straight.’

She swallowed.

‘I don’t think you’ve had one before. You can trust me, though. This goes no further.’

She watched him.

‘I won’t say anything to anyone. It stays between us. And if I think you’re going to do something stupid, I’m going to call you on it. Because most of the time it’s not just your life, it’s mine too. Is that okay?’

She mustered a nod. ‘You’re not going to tell anyone?’

‘You and I both know if I do, then it’ll be a psychological evaluation, possible diagnosis, and then you’ll be put on leave.
