Flagging subject-to-tax sales

To tell QuickBooks Simple Start that some item shown on the invoice is subject to tax, you select Tax from the Tax column. The Tax column appears on the Create Invoices window. (Refer to Figure 9-1 for just a moment if you wouldn’t mind.)

Specifying a default sales tax rule for an item

You can tell QuickBooks Simple Start whether an item is or isn’t usually subject to sales tax. To do this, choose Company➪Lists➪Item List to display the Item List window. Then, right-click the item that’s incorrectly set up and choose Edit from the shortcut menu that QuickBooks Simple Start displays.

When QuickBooks Simple Start displays the Edit Item window, make sure that the code shown in the Tax Code box is correct (see Figure 9-4). If an item is usually subject to tax, make sure the Tax Code box shows “Tax.” If an item usually is not subject to tax, make sure the Tax Code box shows “Non.” I think this is French for “No.”
