DECODING BY VOODOO

Hawk stepped off the ladder. “Thanks, folks,” he told the men manning the ropes. “Appreciate it,” he said as he stood next to the old woman. “That was the Nip you wanted. Signed, sealed, and delivered. I had a few more for you, but I lost them in the river on the trip down here.”

“You have done well, spawn of evil. My son has returned. Our only fear is the revenge of the Nippon.”

“I don’t know what to tell you about that. That leaves you with the rest of the world, lady. Fighting Japs for you, till hell freezes over, wasn’t part of our deal. You owe me some answers.” Hawk, with his chest still heaving from the exertion, was not disposed toward any further bizarre negotiations.

“You speak the truth, most ugly false one. Come to my home. All will be answered as promised. Your servants must defend us from the Nippon while we talk, must they not?”

Hawk squinted in the sunlight striking his eyes. He had lost his helmet. His sandy hair stuck up in several directions. She was playing him like a fiddle. He didn’t give her an answer. She knew that the Japanese were likely on their way to her village, and that they were not in the best of moods. She had only to keep Hawk’s men there long enough to engage the Japanese, until the two warring sides thinned one another out to the point where a superior number of men with spears could master them. Then, maybe Tu could have his own little celebration with the vanquished. Hawk silently followed her around to the porch at the front of the grassy temple. There he saw his men gathered, and recognized the shapeless son of the voodoo queen, who was not as young as he had appeared in the darkness.

“You got lookouts posted?” Hawk called to Canlon from the veranda. “Those Japs might be headed here!”

“Yeah, I’m surprised you’re here! It didn’t look so good, last time I seen you,” said Joe. “It looked like you were tied to the back of a truck, when that river took off with you.”

“Ah.” Hawk waved his hand dismissively. “I coulda got away any time by jumpin’ in the water. I just wanted to knock off a few of the shitbags.”

“Yeah, okay,” said Joe. The prospect of jumping in the rapid water might sound feasible in the abstract, but it looked rather deadly at the time. “You think they’re coming here?”

“That’s what they do, ain’t it? Just watch out. She’s expecting them. We can hold this shitty old fence if we have to. There ain’t that many of them. Have to watch out for ’em bringing in reinforcements.” He followed the medicine woman inside. She motioned for him to sit on a finely made mat on the floor opposite her. A torch burned over them, casting leaping shadows. Feeling tired and mentally drained, it was a relief for Hawk to sit down. He looked up at the flame on the torch, shooting out over him like a giant tongue.
