Chapter 13

Dora wrinkled her nose at the dropped apple core and took great pains to avoid it. She held her skirts up as if rats ran around her ankles.

Albert held back a laugh. He almost felt like a hero scooping the apple core over to the taxi tied at the curb. The draft horse dipped his massive head from the loose reins to nibble at it. "We were just admiring your window scene, Miss Dora."

"It's quite beautiful," Calista agreed. "I am amazed at how quickly you've been able to create so many adorable tea cozies. And the spinning snowflakes, my goodness, you've outdone yourself!"

Dora preened as she smoothed her skirt and coat back into place. "I do pride myself on quick work well done. I've been making tiny crocheted snowmen to add in the center tea party."

Albert watched the two women as Dora explained in detail how each piece was created. He couldn't help but see the sweet modesty and generosity in Calista as she complimented Dora's talent. Not once did Calista's voice take on a false note or draw attention to her own design ideas. Could she deliver as beautiful of a display? He hadn't had a chance to view anything by her hand. Albert wanted to see what she produced that much more.

The way she'd handled the boys, generosity seemed to be an ingrained trait. He counted back the days to when the notes were delivered. Nearly two weeks ago. Had she been bringing a basket of food to the street orphans every day since?

"Good luck, Dora. You're certainly off to a wonderful start," Calista said. "I'd better get to work on my display."

"Good luck to you. I'm sure you have something perfectly lovely planned as well." But the glimmer in her eyes said she didn't think so. "Though remember, you can't steal any of my ideas."

"Albert. Dora." She smiled and moved away from the millinery toward the Gold Block.

Albert caught Calista's elbow. "Do you mind if I walk with you a bit? I'm headed that direction for a meeting." And I want to spend a few more minutes in your company.

"Of course. I'd be delighted if you would." She took the offered elbow.

"Tell me something, if you will," Albert opened the topic. "Are you going to feed the newsies every day?"

"I really don't know. I'm doing the best I can with the resources available to me." She glanced up from under the wide brim of a winter bonnet. "As long as I have some spare food, I think I should give. Don't you?"

"What happens when you don't have enough to give? Won't they have become dependent on you?"

She strolled with her gaze on the ground. "I haven't thought that far. Should I not give when it's within my power? It seems I can only do what I can do. It seems if no one ever does anything, nothing changes." She lifted her gaze back onto Albert's face. "But perhaps that's where the Miss Snowflake Pageant can be beneficial.
