CHAPTER SIXTEEN

The second they pulled up to the red brick two story building, Raye’s heart sank. Squad cars blanketed the parking lot Dimitri and the school principal stood next to Byron struggling to keep Jocelyn up on her feet.

“I am so grounded,” Reagan groaned.

“Stay away from us! You just stay away!” Jocelyn shrieked as she dragged Reagan into an embrace.

“But Mom, it’s my fault. I just wanted to spend some time—” Reagan protested as his mother shoved him toward their grey station wagon.

“Get in the car, Reagan. We will talk when we get home.”

He stomped over to the car and got in. “I’m sorry Grams,” he mouthed as he pressed his forehead against the window.

“Jocelyn, it’s my fault. I should have brought him to school the moment he showed up at my hotel room door. You can plainly see he’s alright. We had breakfast and—" Raye said extending a hand to her daughter. “I never meant to cause you any concern. He was safe with me.”

Byron grappled with Jocelyn as she pulled away. Tears leaked from her eyes like blood.

“No one is safe with you,” she snapped before scrubbing the tears from her face. “Why wasn’t it you instead of Aunt Carrie?”

Byron gathered Jocelyn in his arms and herded her to the car.

Raye took in a slow breath and stepped up onto the curb next to the principal and Dimitri, “Am I under arrest?”

“Charge her with kidnapping. Unlawful imprisonment. Do something,” Jocelyn shrieked as Byron closed the door.

Dimitri shook his head once and Raye sighed. “Raye did you pull a knife on Gerald?”

Raye let her head roll back on her shoulders as the frigid air filled her lungs and made her nose burn. The weight of the switchblade in her pocket made the whole ordeal seem laughable. “Of course not.”

“He has a witness that says you did.”

“I highly doubt that. We were in the church kitchen alone.”

Dimitri face palmed himself, then faced the principal. “I’ll take it from here, thanks.”

“Is he pressing charges?” she asked while stuffing her hands into the pockets of her caramel-colored floor length wool coat.

“He filed for a restraining order, but maybe he should. Something has to reign you in.” Dimitri bit down on a curse before dismissing the uniformed officers with a wave of his hand.

“Excuse me? I’m not some animal that needs to be controlled. He almost killed my grandson, and you expect me to just sit here and take it?”

Dimitri squinted as if he hadn’t heard her properly. “Wait, what are you talking about?”

“Gerald had some plants in the backyard near Aunt Carrie’s garden. Reagan was over there last summer helping around the house. Gerald went nuts when he thought Reagan had touched the plants with bare hands. My grandson could have died.”

“Raye—”

“And don’t tell me it would have been an accident. Why plant them at all? And if he wasn’t trying to cover it up, why did he remove them? Reagan looked the plants up. They were Castor plants; those things are in the same species as Ricin.
