SOLANGE

The memory of her mother’s scream woke Solange again from deep sleep and into a sudden upright position. Tension tightened her grip on the sheets until she got her bearings. Wale immediately stood and came to her bedside, but she waved him away. It wasn’t the first time she had this dream. Each time, she woke at the scream.

Yet lately, her brain resurrected that night more often. Too often.

Wale tried to break through the silence with, “Again, I’m a good listener.”

Solange didn’t respond. She closed her eyes and tried to get her brain to give her more of that night. Either give her it all or let it go, but to give her the same piece over and over was beyond frustrating.

Suddenly, the door to the hospital room opened. Harrison had arrived.

In the full suit, he’d worn to the office earlier, collar crisp as if he’d ironed it mere moments before. He didn’t bother with any of the “how are yous” that normal people asked when visiting someone in the hospital. He merely spat out, “What do you know about Reggie?”

Solange probed her brain for any pertinent details that Porter shared over the years. Nothing stood out. “Porter’s friend. Not a lot.”

“He’s a programmer,” Harrison stated, gazing hard and unforgiving

“Yes,” she responded. That wasn’t a secret to anyone. “He’s been at Psyche Inc. for years.”

“Is he a good one?”

“You’re the one with the Human Resource files. I only know that he works there, and Porter liked him. They watched the same movies, played video games together. And Porter never thought to fire him.”

“But …,” Harrison allowed silence to fill seconds of space. “Emeril brought Wale from Chad instead of trusting Reggie with pHit for Duty.”

“Lucky Reggie,” Wale interjected as he settled back in the chair.

“Elaborate.” Harrison was particularly demanding. But she could see he was working through something.

“It’s like pHit for Duty is cursed.” Wale rubbed his head, his face a mask of consternation. “Emeril worked on it, and he’s gone. I told Solange about it. She’s in the hospital. Cursed.”

Solange shook her head. “Emeril fell asleep at the wheel.”

“No,” Harrison contradicted, raising his index finger. His eyes were glazed with the effort of pulling his thoughts together. “We assume he fell asleep at the wheel because it was late. That’s what the police said. We weren’t in the car. We don’t know what happened. We only know he had an accident.”

“There was no evidence of foul play.” Solange went over every detail she’d been told of that night. “His car ran off the road. No tire tracks like he tried to stop. No indication that another car was involved. The police said open and shut.”

Harrison’s head snapped to Wale. “Was he tired when he left?”

“He didn’t appear so,” Wale answered, frowning. “But it could have hit him later.”

The heart monitor beeping increased. Harrison spoke as if he knew something, and each answer brought him closer to a truth different from the one she’d settled into. That her husband fell asleep at the wheel.
