The purple wisps were back. Kassadina watched as they danced over her fingers, lighting up the bond that had been shattered. It was comforting, to have this, when everything else was gone.

Curse magic should be impossible, her bond should be fully broken. Zambe was hiding things from her. Cordell was dead. Her father wouldn’t be impressed if he knew the extent of the mess she’d caused.

‘I didn’t think purple was your colour,’ Riana commented, by her side on the grassy banks of the lake.

Kass had joined them, ignoring the fact that Mord’s body was lying in the basement of the Academy because of her. She found herself wanting to tell them the truth. She was the daughter of King Lochmond and would have to leave the Academy at the end of the year to join the army that was planning on marching into the Badlands. Her hand in marriage was bound to a Prince she had only met a handful of times, and her dead brother’s voice echoed inside her mind whenever she shut her eyes.

‘It isn’t. It belonged to my brother,’ Kass responded, knowing that Riana had seen her Aura; that silver was her colour. They’d always suited each other, silver and purple.

‘He was an Aura too?’

An Aura, an Objective, an Elemental and a Life. Not, however, a Curse.

‘Yeah. He was much better at it.’

Riana nodded like she understood, and the two of them went back to watching their friends. Kara and Aoife were in the lake, swimming, along with many other first year students.

‘The war’s coming, isn’t it?’ Riana eventually asked, tilting her head to the side to look at Kass.

The girl knew the answer to that. She knew what was going to happen.

‘I think so,’ Kass admitted, letting the purple fade back into her skin.
