Chapter 27

It was a slaughter.

I didn’t realize how desperate for revenge my wolf had become in the wake of the mate challenge. The first day after, she’d seemed to enjoy Taika’s company—at least the company of his wolf. In fact, she’d seemed more tolerant of our new status than I was.

However, in the last week, she’d developed a bit of a chip on her shoulder. Perhaps it happened after we found out that they’d stripped us of our position as alpha. Maybe I’d been so caught up in my feelings about it, I’d ignored hers.

Now there was no denying them.

After I issued the Alpha Challenge and shifted, Taika did the same. His massive black wolf snarled and slavered, pawing the ground as if preparing to charge.

We beat him to it.

I was content to let my wolf have her fun, vindictively pleased every time she sank her fangs in his thick coat. Internally I preened when she drew blood and more than a few pained yips from the beast.

Now you know how it feels to be outmatched.

I knew in my heart of hearts that Taika had been in plenty of battles, and in fact had already submitted to us before. But he’d never been treated to the sharpness of our bite, and today we reminded him exactly why we were the Alpha Queen.

He put up a good fight, and my wolf was in a gaming mood; she wasn’t interested in ending it early. She could have taken him out after just a few minutes, but she wanted him to suffer, and suffer he did. Our claws raked his gleaming black coat until it was dull and matted with blood. She nipped at his legs, his tail, his scruff; anywhere she could snag a bit of flesh and exact her revenge.

When she finally claimed his throat, Taika’s wolf had little fight left in him. The ring was splattered with his blood, and he lay panting, refusing to budge. My wolf chuffed in annoyance; she wasn’t finished, but she wouldn’t kill him.

With an aggravated huff, we trotted over and sank our teeth into his neck. Taika whined, submitting and closing his dark eyes in gratitude.

My wolf dithered. She was still annoyed, but this was her mate, and now that we spent the fire of her anger, she wanted to comfort him.

Sighing, our body lowered to the earth beside Taika’s wolf and we began licking his face with long strokes of our pink tongue. Tai continued panting, his body overwhelmed with trying to heal, and accepted our affection.

I felt more connected to my wolf now than I ever had. Stepping back within my own conscience, I recognized the gradual slip into ‘we’ and ‘our’ in my thought process. I was slowly losing the separation between ‘me’ and ‘my wolf’, and I wasn’t sure how I felt about it.

As the Alpha Queen, did I need that separation? Or did I need the balance that the westerners seemed to enjoy?

The others observed us quietly, clearly waiting for Taika and me to shift back.
