Chapter Eight

By now, Kory would typically have her to-do list for the day categorized and ranked in neat little columns in her notebook. Two or three of those tasks would already be completed, but she’d been in the labs for at least an hour, yet accomplished absolutely nothing.

There were two large desks—one for her and one for Kotara—and an oversized work station with equipment for research and plenty of room for the twins to collaborate. Kory straddled a stool in a completely unladylike fashion at the workstation and let the events of the previous afternoon-into-evening wash through her as she poked at some proteins growing in a glass flask. A wave of mixed emotions filled her chest and exited as a quiet sigh. Spending time with Austin had been wonderful. Period.

On one hand, she wished the man was down in the Labyrinth right now talking to her about his life and just stuff in general. On the other hand, she was glad he was nowhere near because she’d never get anything done, and gawking at his über hotness didn’t count as a task.

Down here there were no windows, hence no sunlight, yet heat radiated from her skin in all the places that Austin had touched the night before. And there’d been a lot of places. It was as if she’d bathed in him, and he’d left his impression on her just like when she lay out under the brilliant rays of the sun and soaked up their warmth.

Sure, the night had been fantastic, but Kory was practical. And that meant she had no expectations other than what she’d put forth last night—enjoy Austin while he was here and let the rest sort itself out.

Just as the thought cleared the ether of her mind, the hair on the nape of her neck began to dance.

A shadow out of her peripheral vision had her twirling around on her stool.

“What the hell are you doing in here?” Kory snapped and then clamped her lips closed. An instinct as old as time made her aware of the shifting dynamic between her and the too-damn-gorgeous-for-words male standing in the doorway.

“Well good morning to you, too, Koreas,” Austin said. And there stood the literal man of her dreams. A dark blue plaid shirt peeked through the partially zipped leather bomber jacket he wore to help ward off the early morning Wyoming spring chill. A pair of worn black denims fit as if they were tailored and showed off muscular thighs and a perfect ass. On his feet were soft leather boots—to her surprise they weren’t cowboy boots but a pair of custom dyed Dr. Marten’s. It still amazed her that this country boy and his brothers were sought-after, world class architects of some of the most expensive and exclusive buildings in the world.

She watched him closely but it really wasn’t necessary because he didn’t bother to school his features. The expression on his face morphed from a hint of surprise, to curious, to completely not amused. In fact, he’d gone from happy to see her to downright pissed in just a few seconds.
