Chapter 10

Alex knew quite a bit about Dahir Ghorbani. He was potentially very important to his team’s effort in one of the team’s best scenarios. His connection to Jahan and thus to Alex was essential to their plan. If Dahir Ghorbani wasn’t suitable for the scenario as outlined, Alex would try the next-best scenario as determined by the team.

Caitlin had been tasked to have Emilie find some match for Iranian officers with a combination of military background, religion-hindered promotions, liberal education, and thirty-four other factors that were thought essential to the team’s plans. E-mails and the flow of Iranian society over the Internet were extracted from telephone and Internet records, led by a massive effort on the part of the NSA and the CIA. Others labored with magazine articles, newspapers, and receipts—collected and digitized.

Emilie had ultimately been fed the vast data flow of Iranian society for the past two years. She was going to crunch that information to a purpose. Fourteen hours later, she spit out her first pass from the mass of data. Caitlin glanced through it and keyed a button to copy the file. She made a few changes to the search criteria and set Emilie off on a second pass on the data.

Four hours later Emilie presented a list of Republican officers who were most likely to be qualified to lead a revolt in modern Iran. There were two groups of eight, several hundred miles apart, with no apparent contact between them. The group in Tehran was thought to be the better first choice for discussion, if only for convenience. There had been many extracted e-mails within the Tehran group, some nearly subversive. They had many dinner receipts that matched those of the others in the group. The group had been meeting for several years, with only one new member recently recruited. Dahir Ghorbani was thought to be second in thought command of this potentially subversive band.
