Chapter 23

The band played the school fight song from the far bleachers in the gym, and Tia wished for earplugs to counteract the echo. The last few students filed in, the stands nearly full as everyone waited for today’s pep rally to begin.

They were already a few minutes behind schedule because of a shouting match between two groups of sophomore boys. A couple teachers were currently questioning two of the boys in one corner of the gym while Colby talked to three more boys on the opposite side.

Colby motioned for his group to leave through the main doors leading to the office, all of them angling across the basketball floor.

Tia caught movement from the other corner when one of the teachers decided to follow Colby’s example. Instead of going out the opposite door, however, they headed in the same direction.

“That’s a disaster waiting to happen,” Tia said to Julie, who stood beside her.

“What?”

“Cameron ought to take those two kids out the back door to keep them apart.” Tia took a step forward to suggest exactly that when one of the boys nearest her sprinted toward Colby’s group.

“Colby!” Tia shouted, but her voice was lost in the roar of the crowd as chaos broke out.

The first punch landed, and instantly, the five boys who had been separated by the length of the gym now engaged in an all-out brawl.

Several teachers rushed forward and managed to get one kid controlled, but the other four kept their fists flying. Then, in a blink, they weren’t the only ones striking out. Like the Hulk following his transformation, Colby’s leg swept out and knocked the boy nearest him to the ground. An instant later, he used the same ploy on another. His hands struck out to separate the remaining two, his left hand lifting to intercept a punch. Colby held the boy’s fist, squeezing until the boy dropped to his knees with a whimper.

The two on the ground scrambled to their feet. A few seconds later, they recognized their error when they found themselves on the ground again.

Tia watched, her own body tensing. She had expected Colby to be able to defend himself, but she had never seen anything like this. She caught a glimpse of his expression, the lack of emotion sending a chill through her.

“Wow,” Julie said. “I’d never want to be on his bad side.”

“No joke.”

Colby flattened another teenager before he hauled him back off the ground. Gripping a second boy by his shirt, Colby held two boys in place and barked out orders to the staff members nearby.

Two minutes later, the subdued culprits were escorted out of the gym, and the band once again began to play.

Tia followed Gabrielle into the living room, where Raul was sitting in a recliner with his feet up. The evidence of his accident last month was now limited to the scar down the left side of his face and the walker parked beside his chair.

Raul looked up when she entered. “Hi, Tia.”

“How are you doing?” Tia asked.
