âIâm hungry.â
Baldwin glanced across the back seat of Bryceâs car and tried not to smile. âYouâre always hungry,â he pointed out.
Jillian shot him a mock glare. âYeah, but this time itâs for real. Breakfast was a long time ago.â Sheâd finally been released from the hospital around noon, and her brother had volunteered to drive them home.
Bryce let out a long-suffering sigh. âWhat do you want?â He spoke like a man who was used to catering to his sisterâs culinary demands.
She thought for a moment, then said, âA spinach knish, some matzo-ball soup and some of Oliviaâs raspberry rugelach.â
Baldwinâs own stomach growled in appreciation. Bryce chuckled. âFair enough. Iâll swing by the deli on the way home. But I think we should get it to go.â
âAgreed,â Baldwin said. âItâs been a long night and Iâd really like to take a shower.â The nurses had given him a scrub top and heâd washed up as best as he could in the bathroom sink, but parts of his skin were still sticky with the residue of Jillianâs blood.
Something flashed in Jillianâs eyes, there and gone before he could identify the emotion. âI could use a nap,â she said, stifling a yawn. âI didnât sleep very well in the hospital.â She glanced away, avoiding his gaze.
Baldwin didnât respond. When heâd finally returned to her room, her eyes had been closed. Maybe sheâd been asleep, or maybe sheâd been bluffing so she didnât have to talk to him. Either way, he hadnât tried to rouse her. Instead, heâd curled up on the foldout sofa again and managed to doze a bit until a nurse had come in for shift change.
Theyâd fed Jillian around seven thirty, and the doctor had visited around eight. Sheâd done a quick exam and checked Jillianâs stitches, then told her she could go home today. But it had taken a while to dot all the iâs and cross all the tâs, so she hadnât been released until around noon. Fortunately, Bryce had come to pick them up, since Baldwinâs truck was still parked at Jillianâs condo.
Bryce pulled into a parking spot in front of Bubbeâs Deli. âStay here,â he instructed as he climbed out of the car. âIf you come in with me, Olivia might never let us leave.â With that, he shut the door, sealing them in together.
For a moment, neither spoke. The silence stretched between them, taking on an awkward, strained quality. Then Jillian sighed softly.
âIâm sorry.â
He turned to look at her, certain heâd misheard. âWhat?â
She glanced at him, biting her bottom lip. âIâm sorry. I said some things last night that I probably shouldnât have. I didnât mean to pry in to your life, or to act like I know whatâs best for you.â
Baldwin blinked slowly, trying to process this turn of events. âItâs okay,â he said. âYou were tired, in pain and probably still feeling the effects of stress. People say funny things when theyâre upset.â
Jillian nodded, relief in her eyes. âYeah. I was feeling.
