CHAPTER 11

Logan

“So, what’s the update?”

Ethan shakes his head as he dumps his bag on the floor and settles on the couch.

“Nothing concrete. You’d think that with all the years we’ve been chasing these bastards, the higher-ups will give us enough leeway to use the resources we have and cut through the unnecessary red tape. But no—they seem to care for their asses rather than the lives on the line.

"It’s frustrating.” He runs his fingers through his hair.

“What’s going on? Maybe I could talk to a few people?”

He shakes his head. “I know you have enough influence, but it will only come down on my head. They don’t think the case is important enough that they’ll use that much workforce and time, so they want us on another case.

“But the only reason they want us working on the new case is because it happened in the town and…” He exhales. “The mayor wants to be re-elected. Never mind that it’s a case that has been in the backwoods for two years, but now that he wants to run again, he wants all closed cases opened, and if we can solve them, the better for our budget.”

“I may have retired and sold my security contracting company, but I can talk them into employing you,” I offer. “You could do more work without the red tape like you pointed out, and that’s what we do—bypass the red tape.”

“Thank you, but I’d rather someone stand up to the higher-ups, and if I’m gone, there’ll be fewer of us. Where’s Lily, by the way? And Madison? I half-expected her to come running once she heard my voice.”

“That’s because she’s teaching Lily the basics of painting. Or Lily is teaching her, I don’t know. After seeing the doctor in Oklahoma, we went shopping, and she decided she wanted to get a small easel, a sketchbook, paintbrushes, and some paint. Madison takes painting lessons in school—one more thing I didn’t know about my daughter—so they are learning together,” I explain.

When Lily said she wanted the paint supplies, it was an out-of-the-blue request. We did go to an art store to get them, but then we came up with theories about what her job could have been, ranging from chef and cook to artist.

“Huh,” Ethan nods. “That’s something. But I’m glad she’s happy.”

“Me too.”

“I’ve been meaning to ask, what about putting her information in the missing persons register?”

“I thought about that,” I say, then tell him what Lily told me. “So, we can’t do anything yet.”

“And I’m not going to sit back and fold my arms,” Ethan laments. “Even if I lose my job, I’ll make sure I find something. In the meantime, we could borrow the resources you have.

“I might not be able to share everything in the case, but I’m sure I can provide helpful information. What do you think?”

I’m about to respond when Madison’s voice echoes in the hallway with the sound of her feet as she races to the living room.

“Uncle Ethan!”

“Well.” I shrug, “there’s the welcome party you were looking for.
