“I still can’t believe she did that,” Sam said. She’d repeated a similar statement every twenty minutes since we’d left Alyssa’s place hours earlier. I didn’t hold that against her—I knew it sucked to find out you couldn’t trust a friend. I’d told Sam over and over as we drove a series of backroads that it wasn’t her fault.

It had taken some time to lose the van. We’d gotten lucky when a set of railroad gates came down, cutting the van off. We’d kept driving several more hours to be sure we’d lost them before stopping at a little roadside motel in the middle of nowhere.

“You can’t blame yourself,” I said, checking out the window. I’d moved my SUV around back so no one going by would see it. I didn’t like the thought of being followed, of being caged in. “I wonder how they knew we were headed there.”

“I didn’t even tell Zack.” Her voice was barely a whisper. She sat on the edge of the bed and dropped her head in her hands.

Her words surprised me. I’d thought she told him everything. The fact that he didn’t know helped lift some of the suspicions I had about him. But it did leave the question of how anyone knew where we were going. We hadn’t been followed. I was sure of that. And then a thought hit me.

“Don’t use your phone to communicate anymore.”

She lifted her head, and her eyes went wide. “You don’t think…”

“It stands to reason that you’re being traced somehow.” I tried to keep my tone calm, sensing that she was on the verge of flying apart. “You texted and called Alyssa.”

“I did.” She picked up her phone that was on the nightstand and turned it off, jabbing the button hard. She tossed the phone onto the carpet. “I guess the good news is that I didn’t email her, so maybe my email is still safe. But how will I know?”

“We won’t, so it’s best to avoid using it.”

“It’s all such a mess. At least Myles is taking this trip well.” She looked toward the portable crib where Myles was stretched out on his back, sound asleep. He’d fallen asleep in the car and we’d gotten him settled for the night without waking him. “It gives me a little hope that I haven’t made a disaster of our lives.”

“Sweetheart,” I said, the endearment coming out unbidden, “it’s going to be okay.” I checked outside one last time, feeling confident that we wouldn’t be found for the night, before going to her. I knelt in front of where she sat on the bed and took her hands.

“I’m afraid,” she whispered. “I’m scared you or Myles will get hurt. I’m scared that they’re never going to stop hounding me. Maybe I should give up, hand over my research, and be done with it.”

“You don’t mean that,” I said softly.

“You’re right—I don’t. I can’t give up on this. I’ve spent too much time, it’s too important to me.” She brushed a tear from her cheek.
