Chapter Six

Remy

Nick is quiet the whole way back, but I don’t feel the need to talk. My body is still buzzing from the delicious orgasm he gave me at the hot spring and the heady exhilaration of bathing naked under the open sky.

I might be here for only a short while, but I’ll carry the memory of today with me always. The steam lapping at the clear green pool. The trees heavy with snow. The hungry look in Nick’s eyes when he saw me for the first time.

Part of me still can’t believe that our interlude in the hot spring actually happened — that a wolf like Nick would want a jumpy, damaged submissive like me.

I’ve been replaying our conversation from this morning over and over in my head, but I can’t make any better sense of it.

I resolve to put it out of my mind. Nick picked up on my attraction to him, and he doesn’t want me to think he took advantage of me emotionally. That’s it — nothing more.

We reach the cabin, but Nick keeps walking, and I follow a few paces behind. He leads me to the metal gate, which blocks the entrance to his snow-packed driveway.

“I thought I’d go into town and grab us a pizza for dinner,” he explains, bending to undo the heavy padlock that holds the chain in place. “You can stay here and take a shower, if you want. I’ll be back in half an hour.”

My heart sinks. Nick is already putting up walls between us. Our interlude at the hot spring was probably just a moment of weakness for him, and now he wants to forget it ever happened.

“Okay,” I say, trying to keep my voice chipper despite my hurt and disappointment. “Pizza sounds good.”

Nick turns to study my face, his eyebrows knitting together. He looks as though he wants to say something else, but he just bends down to open the gate. The metal links of the steel chain clink together as he pulls the chain off, and the sound makes my insides clench.

Chains.

A paralyzing horror floods my body, and I close my eyes to shut out the images that I already know are coming.

The other she-wolves, beaten and bloody, being hauled out of the back of the SUV. Marcus’s wolves had to shackle them with silver chains to keep them from shifting into wolf form. The metallic clink of the chains rings in my ears, along with their grunts and screams.

One woman’s eye is so badly swollen that she can’t open it anymore. It takes two wolves to haul her down to the basement, where an empty cage awaits.

I clench my jaw reflexively as I fight the urge to run. Running only draws their attention, and usually, somebody hits me.

Later I’ll bring the woman some ice to try to reduce the swelling, but if they catch me tending to her wounds, I’ll be beaten for that, too.

More chains thrash against the floor upstairs, and I know what’s coming next.
