It was closer to two hours before Adros appeared at the old oak. Brendan glared at him, and Adros stumbled back. âS-sorry. I had to sneak food from the kitchen.â
Brendan counted to ten internally before smiling. âNo problem. I appreciate it.â
Adros hesitated for only a second before handing Brendan the pack. âUm, itâs ham. I got some of the gravy you like, too.â
Brendan grabbed the pack and quickly dove into the food. He was starving. Heâd barely eaten anything since heâd left New City.
He sat back when he was done, the edge taken off the hunger, but it was still there, reminding him why he needed to do this. Not that he needed much of a reminder. He licked the tin that had held the gravy clean.
Adros had stood silently the whole time Brendan ate, shifting from foot to foot. He glanced back in the direction of the camp. âSo, I should get going.â
âNot yet.â Brendan placed the pack down and pulled his knife from the sheath at his waist and started cleaning his fingernails. âThereâs something we need to discuss first.â
âUm, okay.â
Brendan looked up from his nails. âI need you to get Lyla banished from the camp.â
Adrosâs mouth dropped. âWhat? No, Iâm not doing that. I couldnât do that.â He slammed his mouth shut, glaring. âYou havenât changed, have you? I donât know why I thoughtâ You know, it doesnât matter. Goodbye, Dad.â He turned to head back to the camp.
Brendan narrowed his eyes. âIf you donât, your sisters are dead.â
Adros stopped walking, his whole body tensing. He faced Brendan. âWhat did you say?â
âGet Lyla banished or your sisters are dead.â
âYou canât touch them. Theyâre safe inside the camp.â
âI canât touch them. Thatâs true. But what about the Unwelcome? I donât think your Phoenixes will be able to stand up to them.â
âTheyâve come to camp before. And theyâve neverââ
âBut those times they didnât know where the cave was.â
Brendan let the words lie between them. And he watched his sonâs face fill with anger as he stepped forward and pulled his staff. âThen I guess I need to make sure you canât talk to anyone.â
Brendan held his knife in front of him. âI already have. And unless you get Lyla out of that camp, the Unwelcome will know where to find all of you.â
Indecision warred across Adrosâs face, and Brendan knew he was trying to find the lie in Brendanâs word. But heâd never find it, because there was no lie.
Adros lowered his staff. âWhy? Why would do this?â
âBecause that bitch deserves everything that is coming to her.â
Adros shook his head. âWhat? Youâre going to try and kill her? Sheâll kill you before you can even raise your arm.â
Brendan narrowed his eyes. âOh, sheâll get whatâs coming to her. Donât you worry about that.â
Adros stared at him, his gaze hard. âHow am I going to get her kicked out? Itâs Lyla.â
âThe same way she got me kicked out.â
âViolence? Lylaâs never laid a hand against anyone in camp except during training.â
âNo, she beat youârepeatedly.
