The office door opened, and all three of the friends jumped.

Guffy stuck in his head, and Driskoll—who’d been expecting his father—let out a long breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding.

“Pity about that, isn’t it?” Guffy said. “It was a nice piece.”

“What happened to it?” Moyra asked.

Guffy shrugged. “One morning we came in, and the wings were missing. Torin said he thought some thief with more skill than sense must have nicked them.” At this, Driskoll and Kellach looked at Moyra. “Torin put it in the closet, and I guess we forgot about it—until now.”

Kellach stared at the coat of arms for a moment. “Where did you say our father was?”

“I didn’t,” Guffy said with a smile. “But since you ask, he’s at the cathedral, meeting with Latislav about this whole thing with Lexos.”

Kellach bolted from the room.

Driskoll glanced once at Moyra, and the two chased after him.

“Good to see you again too!” Guffy called after them.

On the street, Driskoll and Moyra had to sprint to catch up with Kellach. His robes slowed him down just a bit, but it was enough for the others to gain on him.

Just as they reached Main Square, Moyra—who was by far the fastest of them—managed to grab Kellach by the back of his robes.

“Let go!” Kellach said, whirling around and snatching his robes away.

“What’s the big hurry?” Driskoll said.

“Weren’t you listening? Dad’s in the cathedral.”

Moyra nodded and spoke to Kellach slowly, as if he was a small child. “Sure. He’s probably talking with Latislav right now—who’s sure to tell him we were just there and might even mention how we assaulted him.”

Driskoll’s eyes widened. “We should be running home right now, so we can be there when he comes back. Otherwise, he’s going to kill us.”

Kellach sighed at his brother. “The Seal might be destroyed, and all you can think about is whether Dad’s going to be mad.” He thrust a finger up at the cathedral. “The third piece of the Key of Order once sat in that coat of arms in Dad’s office. He might have it on him right now. If so, the two things that Lexos wants most are both in that cathedral right now.”

Driskoll turned to look at the cathedral’s massive doors and almost choked again. He didn’t relish the thought of having to go back in and face Latislav so soon after they’d considered taking the piece of the Key of Order from him. At the moment, he wished to see his father even less.

But they had no choice.

“All right,” he said. Moyra clapped him on the shoulder as he spoke. “Let’s go.”

They walked up the cathedral’s steps side by side. When they got to the smaller door set inside the massive ones, it stood open. Kellach went through first, then Moyra.

Driskoll brought up the rear, glancing back at the sunlit square behind him before he plunged into the relative darkness of the cathedral. He longed for something or someone out there to pull him back at the
