Chapter Six
"Well," said Lady Gordon, "don't you look splendid?" Julia turned this way and that, examining herself in the long looking glass. She felt at the same time spoiled and overcome with gratitude.
"I should not accept it," she murmured. The lavender gown made her eyes glow. They appeared more blue than green and did not look so queer in her pale face against her dark curls.
"Of course, you should!" Lady Gordon scolded. "There's nothing wrong with accepting gifts from your favorite uncle."
"My uncle I haven't seen in almost eight years." Julia stood tall and studied the round puffed sleeves on her shoulders.
"A pair of morning dresses and a delicious ivory ball gown is not such an extravagance." Lady Gordon raised a fist of fluttering ribbons in salmon and cream and held them just over Julia's shoulder. "He's more than happy to see to your needs. Besides, he doesn't have his own daughters and no wife either. These would match fine, would they not?"
Julia nodded. The long ribbons danced about her shoulder and her neck. She loved the lavender gown. It made her seem elegant.
"You look divine," Lady Gordon said to Julia's reflection. From behind her, she gave Julia a small embrace. "Everyone already thinks so, so you might as well enjoy your welcome."
The woman stopped speaking suddenly and turned her head to examine her own features in the looking glass. "You should enjoy your age, too," she added with a frown.
Julia chuckled. "You are too generous with your compliments."
The seamstress sitting quietly by the sun lit window rose from her seat. Her mouth was full of pins. She looked ready to poke Julia from head to toe.
After taking careful measurements and sewing a few darts here and there, the seamstress helped her back into her clothes. She escaped and waited at the shop door for her chaperone, watching a sluggish parade of carts and old carriages ramble up and down the sandy streets. It amused her that so much of home's customs and habits were in full effect here, even though that place was far away on what seemed the other side of the world.
Julia put her forehead to the pane to watch a lime green lizard sunning himself on the sill. The glass was blurred, not quite clear enough to see the fine details she knew were there. A dark, round shadow superimposed itself over the glass, and she jumped back. The shadow was a dark, laughing face. She heard him through the window and pursed her lips in condemnation, whether or not he could see her. His silhouette moved to the door, and he pushed it open, looking up when the bell jingled. "They'll be rushing out to dress you next," Julia warned.
Mr. Greenway stopped mid-stride into the dressmakers. He scanned the shelves of fabric and rolls of ribbon festooning the shop like a bridal party. "Whatever are you doing in here?" He turned to Julia, hands on hips.
"I should ask you the same. Are you buying more gowns for your victims?"
"Victims?" He reared back, raising a brow in question.
