Chapter eighteen

Rayne

Tonight was nothing like I expected. Hell, Ethan was nothing like I expected. Watching him fight, there was a fierceness to him. The guy who seemed so easy-going and laid back looked like a predator stalking his opponent. I couldn’t deny that there was some base part of me that was turned on watching him clash with the other man. And then there was almost getting caught being there. I might regret everything tomorrow, but right now I just wanted to live.

Tonight I felt free.

I sat there in my underwear, watching Ethan as he answered the phone. He exchanged quiet words with the person on the other end before he handed it to me. “Hello?” I said, confused at what was happening. Ethan sat beside me, his hand rubbing down the top of my arm.

A male voice finally spoke, panic in his voice. “Rayne, you need to come to the hospital. Something happened.” It took a second for my brain to catch up to who it was and what he said.

“Rory? What’s going on?” I asked, unease settling into my chest.

“It’s Victoria. I couldn’t get in touch with her tonight after she got off work.” His voice cracked as he was talking. “She wasn’t at Inferno. I found her lying in the driveway of her house.”

“Wait what? Is she okay?” The entire world slowed down in that instant.

“The doctors are looking at her right now. They haven’t given me any information yet.”

“Give me a few minutes and I’ll be right there.” I hung up the phone and gathered my clothes off the floor. “I have to go,” I said to no one in particular. My heart pounded in my ears as I raced down the hallway to my bedroom. Ethan followed behind me, darting into Hunter’s and Dominic’s rooms. I quickly found a pair of leggings and a sweater and threw on some tennis shoes.

Dominic met me at the elevator and shoved a cup of coffee into my hand. “We’re coming with you.”

“That’s unnecessary. I appreciate it. I really do, but you have work tomorrow.”

“You aren’t going to fight me on this. Hunter and Ethan are getting dressed and will meet us at the car. Come on.”

After we entered the elevator, a thought popped into my head. “Why did Rory call Ethan?”

Dominic arched an eyebrow at me. “He tried calling you first, but you didn’t answer. We’ve known him since high school. He was a few years behind us.”

The ride to the hospital felt like it took an eternity. The entire time I tried to tell myself to calm down and not expect the worst, but my stomach didn’t get the memo. I sipped the coffee that Dominic had handed me and prayed it would stay down.

When we arrived, I ran to the information desk. “What is the room number for Victoria Glenn?” I asked, my words coming out too quickly.

“I can show you the waiting area for the family. They don’t have her in a room yet, ma’am,” the woman behind the desk answered with a forced smile.
