Is anyone hungry?” Fauna asked, looking around the kitchen table at us. “Tea?” I shook my head.

“I’m fine,” Reece said. “Thank you though.”

“Let’s begin,” Flora said, looking toward the closed door. “Obviously, we want to get through this before Rose comes home and hears any of it.”

I shrugged. “She might take her time.” Reece shot me a look, and I saw all the fairies look over at me in confusion. “I mean . . . you know how it is with . . . berries.”

“Anyway,” Reece said quickly, “Stella told me that you might have some information about our . . . situation?”

“Right,” Merryweather said. She adjusted her kerchief with the air of someone who was getting down to business. “We hit upon something quite ingenious, if I do say so myself.”

Flora nodded. “So. You said you two know the events that are to come.”

“Yes,” I said, nodding. Reece raised an eyebrow at me, and I bit back a smile. “Well, Reece knows it better than me. But I am somewhat familiar.”

“Now, we don’t want to know too much,” Fauna said, giving Merryweather a stern look. “But. In the version of events you know, do things”—she lowered her voice to a whisper, even though it was just us at the table—“work out?”

“Yes,” Reece said. He paused for a moment, and it was like I could tell he was weighing all his words carefully. “I don’t think I should tell you how it all comes together, exactly.” Flora and Fauna nodded, and Merryweather sighed. “But the spell is broken, and there’s a happily ever after for Rose. I mean, Aurora. And all of you.”

“The spell is broken,” Fauna echoed, her eyes shining. “That’s wonderful.”

“We did it!” Merryweather clapped her hands. “I knew we could do it.”

“Calm down, Merry,” Flora admonished.

“But aren’t you proud of us?”

“We haven’t done anything yet!”

“But we will! We do. They said so.”

“We do in the version of events where these two don’t show up,” Flora pointed out, gesturing to me and Reece, and Merryweather deflated a little bit.

“Oh. Right.”

“But assuming that’s still going to be the outcome,” Fauna said, “we devised a plan that revolves around the spell being broken.”

“You see, we can only use our powers for good,” Flora explained. “And while this ordinarily is a good thing, we’re going to need more help to get you back home.”

“But!” Merryweather interjected. “A spell being broken creates a powerful burst of magic. There are few things stronger than that. Especially because this spell isn’t only good magic or evil. It’s Maleficent’s curse, but with Merryweather’s amendment mixed in.”

Merryweather cleared her throat. “It was nigh these sixteen years ago, at the christening of the princess—”

“They know,” Flora cut her off.

“Fine,” Merryweather huffed. “I never get to tell that story, but fine.”

“At any rate, once the spell is broken, and that magic is released, we can contain it and harness it to build a door to send you back again.”

“That sounds amazing,” I said. I could feel my fingers
