Chapter Six

MEL

So I didn’t solve the case. It wasn’t a matter of who served the shellfish. It mattered who’d kept Phil from his lifesaving medicine. And in order to know that, we, ah, I mean the police, would have to know who had access to his EpiPen.

My money was on Brooke.

I spotted hotshot director, Arty Gibbons, schmoozing with handful of ladies in the hallway. In another split second, Caro zipped past me, Teena not more than three steps behind her.

What the heck was Caro doing? Conducting therapy sessions? First she was in the living room, then upstairs, then in the kitchen and now back to the living room. To someone who didn’t know Caro, it could look like she was tired of being cooped up and needed to expend her energy. But I recognized the focus and determined stride for what it was. She was in crusader mode.

I turned my attention back to Arty. He reminded me of an eighties adult film star, sans the mustache. Short, but an air of false confidence that every woman who met him secretly wished she was his lover. His blue eyes checked me out as I strolled toward him. In your dreams, buddy.

More smirk than smile formed his lips as I drew closer. Lordy, if he licked his lips, I’d change my mind and hightail it back to the chaise lounge. He ran a tan hand over his shiny bald head and straightened his red tie, prepping for what I was certain he thought would be a successful seduction.

He had no idea who he was up against.

I held out my hand, purposely stopping a full four feet in front of him.

“Hello, I’m Melinda Langston. Owner of Bow Wow Boutique.”

“Arty.” His smooth dry hand clasped mine. I was expecting a smarmy squeeze. He restrained himself. “You’re the one who brought the clothes.” He spoke as if he were reciting Shakespeare.

I assumed he was talking about the dogs. “I provided the wardrobe for the models, yes. I hope you enjoyed the fashion show. At least what there was of it.”

“It was interesting.” His deep tone said it was anything but. “Did you pick the outfits?”

“A few. I was talking with Brooke earlier and she mentioned that you’re considering filming a reality show here in town about Shadow.”

“She did, did she?”

“Was she mistaken?”

“Not at all. It’s not like Brooke to encourage the competition.”

What was it with this crowd? Was Caro being mistaken for a wannabe celebrity in the making too? “No, thank you. I’ve had enough fame and fortune to last a lifetime.”

“Really? Should I know you?”

I laughed. “Not unless you follow pageants.”

“So it’s your dog that you want to become a star?”

I looked down at Missy who’d managed to create a puddle of drool at her feet within minutes. “Not at all. Missy’s a behind the scenes kinda gal. My assistant is a huge reality show fan. If you were going to film a show here, I wanted to get the details and let her know.
