Reshma Saujani, Brave, Not Perfect

Reshma Saujani, founder of Girls Who Code, believes that girls are raised to be “perfect” not “brave,” but she is on a mission to change this. Before founding Girls Who Code, when she was 33-years-old, Reshma ran for Congress, becoming the first Indian American woman to do so. Yes, she lost (by a big margin, only getting 19 percent of the vote), but according to her this was the first truly brave thing she had done in her life. The experience helped launch her into her true passion of changing how girls are socialized. Girls are taught to smile pretty, to be perfect, to play it safe. Boys, on the other hand, are taught to play rough, climb high, and take risks, learning from an early age how to fail and rebound. Reshma’s studies found that even though many times girls outperformed boys, they were more likely to give up upon failure. Boys, upon failing, would redouble their efforts, while girls would convince themselves they were simply not good enough.
