Chapter Eight

HOLDEN

Before the drama at the beginning of the evening, I’d been looking forward to time with Priscilla. I knew we hadn’t talked about marriage, even though her ad was clear that she wanted a husband. During the movie, after the movie, and at ice cream, it consumed my thoughts and what was to come next, how she would respond.

“Where is this new flower?” She looked around for a lantern.

“It’s over near the trellis.” I have a lantern back there already.

I could see the lanterns already forming a glow within the trellis. Nellie had done exactly as I had asked of her. Sweat was beading on my back as my nervousness grew.

“Look how beautiful the glow is. Holden, you tricked me. You knew we would be coming here.” She stepped under the trellis. “Which side is it on?”

“It’s here, Priscilla.” I knelt on one knee as she spun around to look in my direction. “Will you make me the happiest man alive and marry me?”

“Yes, yes, I will marry you.” She began to cry. “I thought you had changed your mind when you met me.”

“Priscilla, I met you four months ago when I read your ad. I met you even more each time your letters arrived.” I placed the ring on her finger. “I didn’t need to see you to know you were the girl for me. I love you.”

“I love you too.” She stepped into my open arms.

“I wanted to tell you earlier that it would be all right, but didn’t want to spoil the surprise.” I held her tight. “Nellie set up the lanterns for me. I thought it would be more romantic than electricity.”

“You were right. It’s much nicer and what I am used to. This way, we can see the stars still.” She tilted her head back to look up. “Does Aunt Matilda know about this, or Alice?”

“I suspect Matilda knows from Alice because I went to get the ring today.” I shrugged. “Alice knows everything I do.”

“I don’t mind. I only wanted to know if we should go tell them.”

“Do you mean those two over there?” He turned us, still in an embrace, to see them waving from the house. “They look pleased.”

“We have much to figure out in the next two days. Are you sure you want to take on this issue with my mother?”

“She does not concern me. We will convince her we are in love and have a wedding while she is here to attend it. If she gives us trouble, we will catch a train to another city and marry there.” I released her from our embrace and took her hand. “Let’s go celebrate with them before they get upset.”

“Aunt Matilda, you are sneaky. You did not let on earlier.” Priscilla hugged her tight.

“I was not informed. Shortly after you left, Alice called. We have been waiting all night to be here for this.” Matilda grabbed me in a hug. “Thank you for this.”

“We waited so long we started cooking. Are you two hungry?”

“Aunt Matilda, we went to an ice cream shop.
